When is the Archives open?

We are open Monday-Friday, 9-4:30. We do, however, observe ETSU holidays. If you are coming a distance, you may want to call in advance at 423-439-4338.

 

Where is the Archives of Appalachia located?

We are located on the campus of East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee. We are on the 4th floor of Sherrod Library, which is located at the corner of Lake Street and Seehorn Road. This link will take you to a map of the ETSU Campus. Sherrod Library is building 320 on the map.

 

Is there visitor parking on the ETSU campus?

Yes, visitor parking is available. To obtain a parking permit, e-mail the Department of Public Safety at parking@etsu.edu. They will need to know when you plan to visit. Or, you can stop at the Public Safety office when you arrive on campus. The  Public Safety office is located at 908 West Maple Street. This link will take you to a map of the ETSU Campus. The Public Safety building is 153 on the map. A permit allows you to park in any faculty/staff/student parking area. There is no charge for a permit.

 

What kind of genealogical resources are in the Archives?

While our Appalachian Collections focus primarily on the history and culture of the region, we may have family papers of interest to you. Microfilm census records and local newspapers are housed in Sherrod Library's microfilm department, on the 2nd floor of Sherrod Library. This link will take you to the Sherrod Library Catalog.

 

Does the Archives provide reference assistance?

Yes. We provide reference assistance to patrons visiting the Archives. We also provide reference assistance by telephone, mail, and e-mail. A minimum $10.00 reference fee is charged for distance reference requests. There is a one hour limit per request. The quickest way to reach us is by e-mailing us from our Ask an Archivist page.
