Appalachian Collections include personal papers of individuals and families, institutional records of businesses and organizations, photographs of rural and community life, and sound recordings of word and song. We are just as pleased to acquire the reminiscence of a midwife or the scrapbook of a miner, as we are to receive the papers of a prominent business or political leader.

We invite you to enjoy a sampling of our holdings by clicking on the images below.

COLLECTIONS

The Archives has over 800 collections. The diaries, letters, legal papers, business records, scrapbooks, maps, and ephemera that make up these collections document all aspects of life in Appalachia. This link will take you to a sampling of topics of interest to researchers.

PHOTOGRAPHS

The Archives photographic holdings span the 19th and 20th centuries. With over 250,000 images, the Archive reflects the fullness of life in Appalachia. This link will take you to an illustrated list of subjects found in our Appalachian Photographic Archive.

SOUND RECORDINGS

The Archives houses over 50,000 sound recordings. This link will take you to iTunes U where you can hear a selection of traditional ballads, mountain songs, country tunes, folk tales, and much more.
