Paleontology

|
The Paleontology field experience will give students the opportunity to participate in the dig at the Gray Fossil Site and to prepare teaching materials for distribution in local schools. This unit will provide students with a background in basic paleontological methodology, and the opportunity to study the area’s geology as part of its natural heritage.
This unit will focus on three projects. Students will first tour the fossil site and observe the paleontologists at work. Then students will help at the site by wet sieving for fossils and picking through processed sediment for fossils. A third project will involve collecting, processing, and cataloging rock specimens from the area to create multiple “Geology of East Tennessee” teaching kits/displays.
