An Environmental Scan of Trends Impacting County Fair Boards in
Appalachian Ohio

(Last participated in 2010)

The Belmont County Agricultural Society that administers the Belmont County Fair needed to develop a strategic business plan to pursue grant funding to enhance its facility.  The Society conducted its first fair on the new fairgrounds, but also wants to build a year-round events center that would create jobs and generate revenue for the Society and the county.  This is a considerable change from its historical purpose.  ATP students conducted a survey of other county fairs throughout the southeastern Appalachian Ohio region to assess how others operate and fund themselves.  The students also assisted the board in identifying its assets. They made recommendations regarding funding and revenue generation possibilities, which would promote the long term sustainability and growth of the fair grounds.  This plan will be a major asset to the Board when seeking future funding to complete the fair grounds and meet its future infrastructure and programming needs.
