The Harlan County Project: Phase Twelve

Harlan County has turned to tourism as a coal alternative, and created substantial infrastructure. Much of that work has been parallel to the work of the Higher Ground and Crawdad community coalitions, the SKCTC Appalachian Program, and the work of Appalachian Teaching Project students.

The students' focus was on helping local people do things for themselves, entertainment, making art out of local history and circumstances, with the community as audience. Our 2012 ATP work, much of which is aligned with the work funded by ArtPlace, was designed to demonstrate how art and design can help create the kind of places people want to live.
