A Southern Appalachian Reader
When two students of revered English professor Jack Higgs complained that they had no textbook to use to teach their own high school Appalachian literature classes Higgs responded, “Write one.” Nellie McNeil and Joyce Squibb did. This anthology of fiction, poetry, and essays is a useful introduction to the literature of the Appalachian region for general readers and an excellent text for high school and college classes. The book covers a broad range of writers, including John Fox Jr., Mary Noailles Murfree, Thomas Wolfe, James Still, Marilou Awiakta, George Ella Lyon, Jo Carson, Alan Cheuse, Miles Horton, and many others.
