Do you like puzzles? How about geometry tricks? Do you want to work outside part of the time? Have you considered the exciting career of Surveying and Mapping Science? This program is one of less than 20 ABET-accredited programs in the nation. It is a four-year degree for students from an eight state region in the central southern United States. With this degree and some work experience, you can be extremely successful in passing the licensing exam and fulfilling your career goals.
Geomatics, land surveying, land development, and geographic information systems are all professions that offer fresh challenges every day. Without surveying professionals, communities would be unable to develop or expand. Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors while completing projects. You will work in teams for field projects and learn the dual nature of land boundary laws coupled with geometry and subdivision design.
When you graduate, you will be in demand as communities expand and develop. When individuals purchase homes, or businesses build, surveyors help with the projects from the inception to the completion. There is a sense of pride as you drive through a community and can say, "I helped them build this area" or "I designed that section of the community." You can find jobs in private practice, local, state or federal government, or in combination with engineering, landscape architecture, real estate or other professions.
