Olan O. Jones, Jr. - Lifetime Achievement Award
Olan O. Jones, Jr., graduated with honors from ETSU in 1975, receiving a bachelors degree and majoring in both psychology and sociology. He returned to earn an MBA degree two years later.
In 1977, he joined Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport in the Business Career Development Program, rising steadily through the ranks as a statistician, payroll department supervisor, principal representative, and manager. He became the Chief Operations Officer of Eastman Credit Union in 1997, and the next year he assumed his present position as President and Chief Executive Officer of the organization.
The ETSU Foundation counts him among its members, and, through his guidance, the Colleges Eastman Credit Union Faculty Fellowship was created, as well as the Eastman Credit Union Multi-Media Classroom at the Gray Fossil Site. The university appreciates his steadfast support of the ETSU PRIDE program since its inception.
Dale Keasling - Lifetime Achievement Award
Dale Keasling earned a bachelors degree in accounting, summa cum laude, in 1970.
He spent four years of military service in the United States Air Force and then joined Arthur Andersen and Company in Chattanooga as a Certified Public Accountant. He joined First National Bank in Greeneville as a vice president, and then became Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Valley Fidelity Bank and Trust in Knoxville. He is now President and Chief Executive Officer of Home Federal Bank of Tennessee in Knoxville.
His service to his alma mater includes membership on the board of directors of the ETSU Foundation, and he was named an ETSU Outstanding Alumnus by the ETSU Alumni Association. In addition, he was instrumental in instituting both the Home Federal Bank of Tennessee Business and Technology Scholarship and the Home Federal Bank of Tennessee Honors College Scholarship endowments in the ETSU Foundation.
Dan Mahoney - Lifetime Achievement Award
Dan Mahoney left ETSU in 1966 with a bachelors degree in business and entered the U.S. Army, spending a year in Thailand. He served in the Army Reserves for 10 years.
Returning to Johnson City, he helped with the family business an Army-Navy supply store on Knob Creek Road, which has become a landmark over the years. Now, as president of Mahoneys outdoor outfitters stores, he has seen the original enterprise grow from 1,800 square feet to 20,000 square feet, with an additional outlet in Abingdon, Va. In an era of mega-stores, his enterprises stand out for the advice and experience of staff members in sports such as backpacking, fly fishing, kayaking, and hunting.
A Johnson City Commissioner for 12 years, he served the city as mayor in the early 1990s, acted as a Tri-Cities Airport Commissioner for many years, and was active in the No. 1 Tri-Cities Tennessee/Virginia campaign.
He is the recipient of Johnson City Medical Centers Spirit of Johnson City Award and the Junior Achievement regional Laureate Award.
He has served as president of the ETSU Alumni Association, and he is a member of the ETSU Foundation, as well as the Colleges Board of Advisors. He and his wife are members of the Distinguished Presidents Trust.
Ray Thomas - Lifetime Achievement Award
Ray Thomas earned a business degree from ETSU in 1959 and also met his wife at the university. While he attended ETSU, he joined Lambda Chi Alpha, which was then a new fraternity on campus, and he helped the organization to flourish. He later went on to complete graduate courses at Harvard Business School.
After service in the U.S. Army, he joined the Coca-Cola Company in 1961 as district manager in Alabama. He retired in 1995 as a vice president, working in the corporations Atlanta headquarters.
During his years with Coca-Cola, he lived in Massachusetts, California, Montana, Utah, Colorado, Illinois, New York, and Georgia, moving up the corporate ladder with each new location.
He is past president of the ETSU Alumni Association, and was named the 1996 Outstanding Alumnus for his service to the university. In addition, he serves on the ETSU Foundation Board and the Colleges Board of Advisors.
Barbara Bassett Allen - Excellence Award
A member of the ETSU Class of 1983 with a degree in accounting, Barbara Bassett Allen was quickly hired by IBM in Kingsport, where she worked as a systems engineer and in network marketing for 11 years. From 1990 to 1993, she also tried her hand as an entrepreneur, opening Cookie Bouquet in Johnson City.
Now, she has turned her attention to a new enterprise as the general manager of Johnson City's Stowaway Storage.
She is the recipient of Milligan Colleges Leadership in Christian Service Award for her volunteer activities.
John G. Campbell - Excellence Award
John G. Campbell, Kingsport's city manager, served Johnson City in that role from 1984 until 2001, after five years as the assistant city manager. His expertise earned him many accolades, among them the title of Tennessee City Manager of the Year in 1992 and 1999, and his selection by the East Tennessee Chapter of the American Society of Public Administrators as the 1988 East Tennessee Public Administrator of the Year.
Prior to assuming the management reins in the Model City, he was associated with Networks, a joint partnership of Bluff City, Bristol, Kingsport, and Sullivan County. The organization strives to promote economic development within the region in a cooperative manner.
His career in economic development across the region also includes service on the Johnson City/Washington County Economic Development Board for 19 years, involvement in the development of the Johnson City Med-Tech Corridor, and consultant assistance to governments and businesses across the Southeast, including Johnson City's Powell Companies.
After earning a bachelors degree in civil engineering and a masters degree in public administration from The University of Tennessee-Knoxville, he has continued his education through more than 50 seminars and workshops, among them UTs Tennessee Leadership Institute and the Senior Executive Institute at the University of Virginia.
Recognized as a visionary leader and a champion for ETSUs role in the region, he has taught city management classes in the College of Business and Technology. He has also facilitated several partnerships between ETSU and Johnson City, including the digital media wing at the Millennium Centre and several athletic venues for Buccaneer sports. In addition, he has acted as a mentor to more than 30 ETSU student interns in political science, business, and technology.
He and his wife, Gail, are members of the ETSU Foundations Distinguished Presidents Trust.
Daniel Eldridge - Excellence Award
Daniel Eldridge graduated as an ETSU Class of 1985 member and traveled to Dallas, Texas, to accept employment with MCI Communications as a civil systems engineer, designing and constructing fiber optic and microwave communication facilities nationwide.
In 1987, he joined Summit Communications as a general manager in the Jackson, Miss., office.
Returning to Johnson City in 1990, he founded Com-Net Construction Services, focused on building wireless communication facilities for companies such as AT&T, Spring, BellSouth, Nextel, and Verizon.
In 1997, the company pioneered the new field of development, ownership, and leasing of wireless facilities, and, in 1999, Com-Net merged with SBA Communications, and the combined entity went public. As president of SBA Network Services, he saw the company grow to 550 employees and an annual revenue of $130 million.
After departing the company in 2001, he organized Eldridge Properties and Daniel J. Eldridge, General Contractor, LLC, both involved in the development and construction of residential and commercial properties, as well as investment real estate.
He serves on the Colleges Board of Advisors, and with his wife, Tammy, who is also a member of ETSUs Class of 1985, established the Dan and Tammy Eldridge Faculty Fellowship in the College of Business & Technology. They are also members of the ETSU Foundations Distinguished Presidents Trust.
William B. Greene, Jr. - Excellence Award
William B. Greene, Jr. became the youngest bank president and chief executive officer in the United States when he was 24 years old and took the reins of Carter County Bank. A founder of many banking concerns over the last 20 years, he was part of the first major banking merger in the nation with First union Corporation, now Wachovia Bank, which became the country's fourth largest bank.
He is the chairman of BancTenn Corporation, along with Carter County Bank and Carter County BanCorp in Elizabethton. He is also chairman emeritus of the restaurant concern Lone Star Steakhouse and Saloon.
A member of the Wake Forest University Class of 1959, he also studied at Northwestern University and the Harvard Graduate School of Business and graduated from the Stonier School of Banking at Rutgers University. In addition, he served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of captain.
He holds numerous amateur golf titles and is chairman of the Tennessee Golf Foundation. He has represented Tennessee five times on the Mid-South Cup Team and has been a member of the Tennessee Amateur Cup seven times.
As chairman and founder of the William B. Greene Foundation, he supports numerous organizations devoted to improving the quality of life for many.
In 1990, he was awarded the title of ETSU Honorary Alumnus in gratitude for his service to the university, and he has been a member of the ETSU College of Business and Technology Board of Advisors since its inception more than 20 years ago.
He is responsible in large part for the facility serving the ETSU men's and women's golf teams, the Frederick B. Warren-William B. Greene, Jr. Golf Center. He also instituted the Bank of Tennessee-The Ridges Intercollegiate Invitational Golf Tournament, a premier college golf event. His William B. Greene, Jr. Men's Golf Award is presented annually to the Buccaneers most valuable player. He is a member of the ETSU Foundations Distinguished Presidents Trust.
John Boylan - Horizon Award
John Boylan earned a degree in marketing from ETSU in 1985, after serving as Inter-Fraternity Council president during his college career.
After graduation, he joined Carnation Company as a territory manager in Knoxville. Transferring to Charlotte, N.C., in 1987, he assumed direct account responsibility for Kroger in the mid-Atlantic region.
In 1989, he changed careers by accepting a position as marketing representative for Spectrum Properties, a privately held commercial real estate leasing, management, and development company based in Charlotte. He moved to Winston-Salem seven years later to open a new Spectrum office, and he became a partner in the firm in 1996.
Beginning in 2004, he assumed the office of president of Spectrum Properties Management Company, responsible for over 4,000,000 square feet of commercial office buildings with a market value of $800 million.
His services are offered to the College as a member of the Board of Advisors.
Mary Ellen Miller - Horizon Award
Mary Ellen Miller earned an MBA degree at ETSU in 2000. While she was a student, she helped to found the Graduate Business Students Association. She received her bachelors degree at Cornell University.
Her varied career includes serving as a reporter for Johnson City's WJHL-TV, as a communications specialist for Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin, and as a partner and director of public relations for the Creative Energy PR firm in Johnson City. She was a director with ETSUs Office of University Advancement before becoming the first marketing director at Hunter, Smith and Davis, a large regional law firm.
She is the executive director for Marquee Publications. The organizations Marquee Magazine strives to provide an accurate picture of life in the Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, and Western North Carolina region.
The recipient of a Woman who Makes a Difference Award from the Girl Scouts of the Appalachian Council for her mentoring of young women, she was also named one of the Forty Under 40 by The Business Journal of Tri-Cities Tennessee/Virginia. In addition, she was named a Chamberlain Scholar by the National Society of Fundraising Executives.
John W. Speropulos - Horizon Award
John W. Speropulos holds two undergraduate degrees from ETSU, a bachelor of business administration in accounting earned in 1986 and a BBA in finance awarded seven years later.
His career has taken him from a position as an accountant with Baylor and Backus in Johnson City, to becoming the food service director at a Young Life facility in New York state, and then returning to Johnson City as leasing director with Ed Street Development Company. By the late 1990s, he was the chief financial officer of Medical Management Services.
For the past seven years, he has acted as property manager and development partner, handling commercial sales and leasing for the Mitch Cox Development Group.
He is a graduate of the Leadership 2000 Program, and he holds membership in many professional organizations.
