Hochschule Bremen
The Hochschule Bremen is a state institution of higher education. It has the academic status of "Fachhochschule," a university of applied sciences. In contrast to the traditional universities in Germany, the "Fachhochschulen" tend to offer more specialized programs emphasizing teaching, applied research, practical application and experience, internship programs, and integrated international degree courses. The programs at the "Fachhochschule" are quite structured, mostly four year programs, consisting of a high degree of required courses in the particular area of study and relatively few electives.
Officially founded in 1982 as a successor of the Navigation School of 1799 the Hochschule Bremen has been innovative and increasingly international ever since. This extraordinary combination had a formative influence on the way the Hochschule Bremen teaches today: practice and application oriented. These orientations are not only shown by the fact that a practical training is an obligatory part for most of the students. Moreover, the Hochschule Bremen employs practicing professionals as part-time lecturers and maintains good-working relationships with free and public enterprises.
Approximately 7,000 students are currently registered at 35 degree courses. One third are studying on 27 international degree courses being obliged to complete at least one study semester abroad.
