Core Courses

Small Business Management (3 credits) – Prerequisite: Graduate Standing. This course designed to teach the skills necessary to establish and run a successful small technology based business. A focus is placed on technology-based businesses such as information technology, digital media and biotechnology. The teaching and learning approach consists of lectures, discussion, teamwork, and presentations.

Entrepreneurial Finance (3 credits) – Prerequisite: Graduate Standing. This course provides the fundamentals for managing an entrepreneurial venture from the financial perspective. Topics include identifying financial and fund-raising strategies, managing cash flow, obtaining venture and growth capital, long term value creation and basic accounting principles that every entrepreneur should know. The teaching and learning approach consists of lectures and exams.

Strategic Management of Technology and Innovation (3 credits) – Prerequisite: Graduate Standing. The course provides the student with a sound, basic knowledge and understanding of technological innovations including forecasting, strategic implications, implementation of technological strategies, and new product development. Further, it provides the student with an ability to aid the manager who is responsible for the overall strategic management of an organization to deal with issues such as resources, technology, innovations, and R&D. The teaching and learning approach consists of lectures and exams.

Innovative Entrepreneurship (3 credits) – Prerequisite: Graduate Standing. This course is the driver for the Teaching and Learning sub-system shown in Figure 3. The focus is on new business creation based on technology innovation. The course provides the innovative prudent risk taker with a practical approach for converting brilliant ideas into wealth. The fundamental methodology is applicable to all who have the desire and drive to start their own business or to those who have new product and/or new business development responsibilities within existing businesses. The teaching and learning approach consists of lectures and group exercises with emphasis on teamwork, team exercises, and presentations. The final output of this course is a business plan that can be further refined and tested during the Strategic or Entrepreneurial experience.

Strategic Experience (3 credits) – Prerequisite: Completion of other courses in the Entrepreneurial Leadership Graduate Certificate Program. This course is the capstone for the program. Engineering Technology and MBA graduate student consulting projects allow graduate students nearing the end of their program to apply knowledge and skills in a real-world business, industry and/or technology-based new venture environment. The projects also provide opportunities for the university to support the business and professional communities and the regional economy. Selected graduate students under the supervision of Engineering Technology and College of Business faculty staff consulting teams. Some of our most successful projects have been cross functional in nature. For the Graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurial Leadership the student teams take the business plan developed in our course in Innovative Entrepreneurship and further refine it in our Business Incubator or “Living Laboratory.”

Leading Continuous Improvement (3 credits) – Prerequisite: Graduate Standing. This course provides a study of the skills and knowledge necessary for business and industry to enhance competitiveness in the global arena. The focus is on customer driven quality using Baldrige and Six Sigma principles and strategic implementation. The teaching and learning approach consists of lectures with emphasis on teamwork, team exercises, and presentations.

Leading Empowered Problem Solving Teams (3 credits) – Prerequisite: Graduate Standing. This course is designed to provide graduate students with practical, hands-on experience enhancing their ability to work together solving complex business and technical problems as a cohesive team The teaching and learning approach consists of lectures, discussion, teamwork, and presentations.

Scheduling for Project and Quality Management (3 credits) – Prerequisite: Instructor Approval. This course provides a detailed study in planning, organizing, and controlling projects. Computer software is used to schedule projects. Emphasis is placed on time, resources, and capital considerations for the project. The teaching and learning approach consists of lectures, team exercises, extensive laboratory work, and presentations.

Project Management (3 credits) – Prerequisite: Graduate Standing. This course provides a study of contemporary project management. The course focuses on the development and/or enhancement of the ability to successfully plan, schedule, budget, monitor, and control the execution of projects. The teaching and learning approach consists of lectures with emphasis on teamwork, team exercises, and presentations.
