The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at East Tennessee State University is located in Hutcheson Hall. Our department is one of seven departments in the College of Business and Technology. The department has ten full-time faculty. There are approximately 225 majors studying in the various concentrations offered by our department. Minor programs of study are also offered in each concentration area.
We offer educational programs designed to enable and inspire students to plan and take actions for the well-being of self and others in the home, workplace, community, and world. Our unique focus is on families, work, and their interrelationships. Our goal is to contribute to a healthy, productive, and more fulfilling life for people in our community, and our world by teaching practical, scientific, and technical knowledge about everyday life that individuals, families, and communities can use to make sound decisions.
The field of Family and Consumer Sciences offers a wide array of career opportunities. Once referred to as "home economics", today the family and consumer sciences (FCS) profession is continually responding to the changing needs of modern society. The FCS profession unites a variety of professionals who work in specialty areas that enhance the safety, well-being, and quality of individual, family, and community life through:
- Food, nutrition, dietetics, and fitness education and practices
- Life skills for individuals and families
- Safe and efficient home and work environments
- Apparel and textile design and merchandising
