Dr. Kridler, Associate Professor, earned a diploma in retailing and interior design from Bauder Fashion College in 1973. She completed a B. S. in Fashion Design and Merchandising in 1976 and an M. S. in Textile Science in 1977 from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. During her college career, she worked as a fashion coordinator and buyer for Bill's Warehouse and after completing her M. S. she worked as a buyer and manager for Shane's Boutique in Gatlinburg. She taught at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio as an instructor for three years. Dr. Kridler completed her Ph.D. in 1985 at Ohio State University in Columbus with a major in Textiles and Clothing and minors in Family Relationships/Human Development and Social-Psychology. She served as an assistant professor in the College of Human Ecology at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville from 1985 to 1989 and then as the Director of Marketing and Development for Proffitt's Department Stores.
Dr. Kridler teaches Child and Family Studies and Merchandising for The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at East Tennessee State University. She served the department as chair from 1999 to 2004. She served as the Tennessee evaluator for the National Funding Collaborative on Violence Prevention/Community Institute for Peace for seven years and continues her research and service involving at-risk youth.
Her areas of expertise include youth violence prevention, family and community relations, family development, community sustainability, apparel/interior design, textiles, social-psychology of dress and adornment, dress for success, retain buying, advertising and promotion, and visual merchandising. Research interests include at-risk youth and families, youth violence, civic sustainability and engagement, theatre costuming and apparel design for juried competitions.
Recent honors include Tennessee Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Distinguished Service Award, 2004; Tennessee Association of Family and Consumer Sciences District D Service Award, 2004; Kappa Omicron Nu Excellence in Teaching Award, 2001. Dr. Kridler mentors the JUSTUS TROUPE, youth performance poetry group. This group has performed throughout the region, state and nation.
