Department of Family and Consumer Sciences
gains AAFCS accreditation
The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences within the College of Business and Technology has been granted 10-year accreditation by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS).
The Council for Accreditation of AAFCS is a specialized accrediting agency designed to strengthen family and consumer sciences education at the college and university level and dedicated to assuring the quality of the education offered in programs of professional study. After thorough voluntary evaluation, the Council recognizes those programs that meet or exceed stated standards.
In the accreditation report, AAFCS commended the departmental chair, Dr. Angela Radford Lewis, as a "highly skilled, visionary, and effective leader" and singled out ETSU President Dr. Paul E. Stanton Jr., Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Bert Bach, and College of Business and Technology Dean Dr. Linda Garceau for their support of the department.
The accreditation report also praised the program faculty members who not only provide high-quality instruction, but "conscientiously advise, mentor, and offer opportunities for student development through community-based projects and well-focused field study assignments."
The department's creative use of resources and space was also acknowledged, with special mention of the remodeling of the foyer of Hutcheson Hall, the department's academic building, as a class project with a student-conducted phone-a-thon used to secure funding.
The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers a bachelor of science degree with concentrations in consumer studies/family and consumer sciences education; interior design; merchandising (apparel and interiors); and nutrition and foods (dietetics and food service management). The department also offers a master's degree in clinical nutrition and an 11-month dietetic internship. There are currently 216 undergraduates and 23 graduate students enrolled in the department.
