The Chemistry Department currently has nine faculty members representing the four major divisions of chemistry. This department also has several full time, non-tenure track instructors and adjunct professors to help with teaching special topics and overflow sections of undergraduate courses. This department offers a Bachelor and a Master of Science degree. It graduates about ten undergraduate majors and three masters' students each year. Many undergraduates also minor and enroll in the department to pursue health-related professional training later. The majority of the Master degree students are given teaching assistantships or tuition scholarships when they qualify. To achieve the objectives of our goals and mission, the department offers programs and services which are described in the specific pages of this web site.
The Department of Chemistry strives to educate all students who enroll with the fundamental principles of chemistry and the experimental skills which are required to further their studies in related fields and careers in which such knowledge of a subject is important. The department also wants to provide students who major in the discipline with the theoretical and experimental requisites and experiences that will make them competent, conscientious, responsible, and quality practitioners and scholars of chemistry. As corollary to the aforementioned mission, the department has the following objectives:
- To establish a well-conceived, rigorous, relevant, and continually updated curriculum for the instruction of all students who enroll in any course offered by the department. The set of courses offered should provide the fundamental principles and basic skills appropriate to the requirements of related fields and chemical disciplines. The curriculum should also drill and train our chemistry majors in the theoretical and experimental principles and knowledge of chemical science to eventually create competent, conscientious, and responsible professionals in any career where proficiency in chemistry is essential.
- To have quality instructors and support staff, and to encourage all members of the faculty to be conscientious teachers and compassionate advisors to students. The department will also attempt to help foster the faculty's scholarly activities and their intense efforts to increase the pool of fundamental understanding and applied knowledge in the chemical sciences.
- To adhere, support, and promote the mission and goals of ETSU in education, research, and service; and to actively participate in the mission and goals of local, regional, and national chemistry professionals. In short, the Chemistry Department at ETSU wants all associated with it, both students and faculty, to be responsible, productive, and ethical citizens of the planet Earth.
