                                                             Science First!

                                            A graduate Fellowship Program Supported by the National 
                                            Science Foundation Division of graduate Education

                                                            Cohort I: Summer 2008-Spring 2010

                                                East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee
                                In Partnership with North Side Elementary School of
                                Science, Mathematics, and Technology
                                   
    SUBJECT TO FINAL NSF FUNDING


                                           
Nine graduate students (known as GK-12 Fellows) will have the opportunity to earn a
                                            stipend of $30,000 for each of two years while earning a Master's degree in Biology,
                                            Chemistry, or Mathematics at East Tennessee State University. Full tuition support will 
                                            be provided in addition to the stipend, and there are ample travel funds available for 
                                            attendance and presentation at professional meetings and for a yearly trip to 
                                            Washington DC to meet with students from other GK-12 programs.

                                            The students' research intensive program will be brought to life in the Elementary 
                                            School environment as Fellows make age-appropriate and age-accessible research 
                                            presentations to students in grades K-5, thus encouraging our youngest Americans
                                            to pursue opportunities Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics(STEM)
                                           fields. Fellows will be based at North Side Elementary School, a high need and racially/
                                           diverse Johnson City School. In addition, Fellows will work with the teachers at North
                                            Side Elementary to create classroom materials for an entire, integrated, stand-alone
                                            K-5 curriculum that is research-based, science-driven, and science-motivated.

                                            The ideal candidate for this project will have taken a wide variety of courses in their
                                            major and in science and mathematics in general. A distinguished academic record
                                            and evidence of research interest are essential. Undergraduate research experience

                                            Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents to quality, and applications
