ETSU Student Affiliates

Welcome to  the ETSU Chapter of the Student Affiliates  of the American Chemical Society.

For those of you who don't know the Student Affiliates, or SAACS for short, we are a national organization. The purpose of SAACS is to allow students who are interested in chemically oriented careers to network with the world's largest scientific organization. The  ETSU Chapter has been recognized nationally as an outstanding chapter 18 times. Our chapter has a very involved public outreach program. Our activities include demonstration or "magic" shows at Hands On! children's museum and other locations and hosting the Hands On! Chemistry club in the spring. We also go on fun activites with our members, including hikes, picnics, and other outings. We also sponsor trips to ACS national and regional meetings, which allow students who do undergraduate research with one of our faculty members a chance to present their work, alongside other students, and in front of ACS representatives from many industries and universities; past trips include New Orleans, LA, Memphis, TN, Statesboro, GA, and Birmingham, AL. If students choose to join, they may do so for a membership fee of only $17. As a member of the national organization you are given a discounted rate (up to 90%) on publications of the ACS. You are also given six month subscriptions of "In Chemistry" and "Chemical and Engineering News," which provides you with information on graduate schools, careers, major scientific issues, other chapters, and information on the need of the future workforce. Also, you gain access to the ACS employment services which can assist in finding a job after graduation. If you are an ETSU student and are interested in joining the ETSU chapter, look for meeting notices in Brown Hall, drop by room 177 of Brown Hall, or send e-mail here, and we will send you the literature for a national membership and the time of our next meeting. If you are not an ETSU student, talk to a Chemistry Department faculty member at your college or university.  We are not alone and there are many other chapters out there.
