therefore unable to complete the
orientation component prior to

1. Before
contacting ETSU, the prospective
candidate verifies that the
school system has a partnership with
ETSU. (List
of current partners)
After verification, the prospective
candidate's school system:
2. Verifies that the individual
it intends to hire has A) a bachelor's
degree with a major in the discipline
for which he or she is being hired to
teach, OR B) received qualifying
scores on the required Praxis II exams
in the field in which he or she is being
hired to teach, AND C) a minimum
GPA of 2.5. (Tennessee Department of
Education Requirements)
3. Contacts Dr. Elizabeth
Ralston,
ralston@mail.etsu.edu, with the
following (East Tennessee State
Requirements):
- Intent to hire letter
- Official transcripts verifying
degree (Undergraduate GPA of 2.5
overall)
- ACT of 22 or SAT of 1020 or
PRAXIS I complete (all three
sections)
- A copy of the Type II licensure
application.
After the school system
completes the above process, the
teacher:
4. Contacts Dr. Elizabeth
Ralston and schedules an appointment to
discuss the licensure program.
5. Completes an application
packet for a non-degree student and
submits it to the School of Graduate
Studies.
6. Schedules classes from the
appropriate program of study and pays
the necessary fees by the deadline,
successfully completing a minimum of
three (3) hours before the next school
years begins.
7. Notifies school system when the
required number of graduate hours in the
appropriate program have been
successfully completed.
8. Maintains contact with the
Alternative Licensure coordinator, Dr.
Elizabeth Ralston during the time he or
she is employed under alternative
licensure (until the requirements of
twenty-four graduate hours in the
appropriate program have been
completed).
When the student notifies the school
system of successful completion of three
(3) hours, the school system:
9. Verifies from the
Alternative Licensure coordinator, Dr.
Elizabeth Ralston that the minimum
number of required hours has been
successfully completed.
10. Applies for license renewal
for the next school year and sends a
copy of this application to the
Alternative Licensure coordinator, Dr.
Elizabeth Ralston.

Renewal Process for
Alternative Licensure Type II
Second year process:
Prior to the first renewal, the
teacher holding the Alternative Type II
License must have successfully completed
the orientation component, the
equivalent three semester hours of
course work from the approved program of
study and taken all the Praxis II
examinations, except the PLT, for the
endorsement(s) sought. (Source:

Repeat steps 6-10.
Third year process:
Repeat steps 6-9, including
completion of remaining courses and
Praxis II exams and apply for
advancement to full license.
