Alternative Licensure Type II

Candidates are those who are late summer or mid-year hires and were therefore unable to complete the orientation component prior to employment. (Source: Tennessee State Board of Education)

1.  Before contacting ETSU, the prospective candidate verifies that the school system has a partnership with ETSU. (List of current partners)

After verification, the prospective candidate's school system:

2.  Verifies that the individual it intends to hire has A) a bachelor's degree with a major in the discipline for which he or she is being hired to teach, OR B) received qualifying scores on the required Praxis II exams in the field in which he or she is being hired to teach, AND C) a minimum GPA of 2.5. (Tennessee Department of Education Requirements)

3.  Contacts Dr. Elizabeth Ralston, ralston@mail.etsu.edu, with the following (East Tennessee State Requirements):

  • Intent to hire letter
  • Official transcripts verifying degree (Undergraduate GPA of 2.5 overall)
  • ACT of 22 or SAT of 1020 or PRAXIS I complete (all three sections)
  • A copy of the Type II licensure application.

After the school system completes the above process, the teacher:

4.  Contacts Dr. Elizabeth Ralston and schedules an appointment to discuss the licensure program.

5.  Completes an application packet for a non-degree student and submits it to the School of Graduate Studies.

6.  Schedules classes from the appropriate program of study and pays the necessary fees by the deadline, successfully completing a minimum of three (3) hours before the next school years begins.

7. Notifies school system when the required number of graduate hours in the appropriate program have been successfully completed.

8.  Maintains contact with the Alternative Licensure coordinator, Dr. Elizabeth Ralston during the time he or she is employed under alternative licensure (until the requirements of twenty-four graduate hours in the appropriate program have been completed).

When the student notifies the school system of successful completion of three (3) hours, the school system:

9.  Verifies from the Alternative Licensure coordinator, Dr. Elizabeth Ralston that the minimum number of required hours has been successfully completed.
