Confidentiality of Student Records (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (USCA 20, 1232G) prohibits the release of educational records or personally identifiableinformation except directory information without the written consent of the student other than to... "Other school officials including teachers within the educational institution or local educational agency, who have been determined to have legitimate educational interest..."

Advisors and other university officials have a right to access educational records if performing a task or function which constitutes a legitimate educational interest. However, this information may not be released to third parties without the written consent of the student. All third party requests are to be addressed to the Office of the Registrar.

Inappropriate access is prohibited by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
