In the years between 1939 and 1945 more than eleven million people, six million of these Jews, were annihilated at the hands of the Nazi party. Included in this 11 million were gypsies, gays and lesbians, Jehovah’s Witnesses, political prisoners, criminals, emigrants, and those labeled asocial, along with many others. Each person was required to wear a triangular patch reflecting her or his deemed imperfection according to Nazi rule. This mass execution has left permanent scars on the face of humanity. Holocaust Remembrance Day has been observed since 1950. The 27th of Nissan was chosen because it was within the time span of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, yet beyond the beginning of Passover. In 1951 Israel’s parliament declared Yom Hashoah U’Mered HaGetaot (Holocaust and Ghetto Revolt Remembrance Day). After several name changes the recognition was simplified to Yom Hashoah. This holiday usually falls between the middle of April and the middle of May on the Julian calendar.
Various types of commemoration are observed this day, such as the Field of Flags we have at ETSU. This solemn tribute gives us a chance to reflect on the tragic events and remember the victims. Its purpose is to inform observers about the facts surrounding the Holocaust and to tell the stories of those who were there. By increasing awareness of the Holocaust and similar occurrences in recent years, we hope to help prevent future episodes of genocide and increase ways to protect basic human rights for everyone. The impact that this event has had on world history is truly enormous. Educating future generations about the birth and progression of such devastating governmental control is crucial to this prevention of injustice. Of primary importance is the hope that comes from the knowledge that, in spite of the unspeakable horrors that occurred, the Jewish population was not wiped out. The strength and courage of the survivors and their descendants are to be an inspiration to us all.
