At the turn of the 20th century people began proposing a celebration to honor Native Americans. In 1914, Red Fox James, a member of the Blackfoot tribe, rode horseback from state to state hoping to gain support for a day of tribute. In 1915, a Seneca tribe member, Dr. Arthur Parker, convinced the Boy Scouts to designate a day of recognition for Native Americans. One year later New York was the first state to celebrate American Indian Day. In following years, other states also developed similar celebrations. In 1976, a Senate resolution was passed to authorize the president to declare October 10-16 as Native American Awareness Week. In the following years the celebration was bounced around on the calendar with inconsistent names. In 1990, the recognition was expanded to a month-long celebration during November as has remained so since.
The existence and heritage of the Native American peoples in this country is invaluable. Knowledge of their history, experiences, culture, and current situation is crucial to ensuring that the value is not lost and that history does not repeat itself. It is our mission to help end the oppression that this population has endured. Over 450 federally recognized tribes exist across the United States in every area of the country. The resources available here are intended to promote education and awareness of the Native American way of life and celebrate the vast diversity of individual tribes and their existence in our world today.
