The American Psychiatric
Association's Silver Achievement Award for 2004 was awarded to the
Tenncare
Centers of Excellence for Children in State Custody. The Centers are
currently located
at East Tennessee State University, Vanderbilt University
Medical College, and the University of
Tennessee - Memphis. The COE
concept was designed to augment existing capacity to provide
direct and
ancillary medical and behavioral health services to this special
population. It grew out
of a need to improve the adequacy of Early and
Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment
Services ; the provision of medically
necessary services to children in state custody; and the
permanency process for
children in state custody. This award was given to the COEs in recognition
of their response in addressing this service gap and their ability to coordinate
treatment and other
services for this previously neglected population.
