To satisfy state requirements, candidates for school counseling without teaching certification must have taken-either as an undergraduate or a graduate student-a course in Foundation of Teaching (Education) and a Special Education course covering Exceptional Learners. The faculty recommend that students needing these courses take at least one of them at the graduate level, so that it may count as the guided elective. The two graduate courses at ETSU are:

  • EDFN 5410 - Foundations of Education
  • SPED 5500 - History, Issues, & Trends in Educating Exceptional Learners

The two undergraduate courses at ETSU are:

  • EDFN 2300 - Foundations of Teaching
  • SPED 2300 - Exceptional Learners in the Schools and Communities

Again, those seeking a school counseling license with a teaching certificate do not need to take any of the above courses. Those without a teaching certificate must take one EDFN course listed above and one SPED course listed above.

NOTE: Courses are offered in a manner to facilitate students who wish to complete their degrees in a two-year period. Changes in course offering, however, happen regularly, which is why it is important to consult with an assigned advisor.
