Park & Recreation

CONCENTRATION OVERVIEW

The Park and Recreation Management Concentration provides instruction and training in the planning, organization, leadership and management of Park and Recreation agencies and programs. Students can choose from two tracks within the major; recreation administration or outdoor leadership. This flexibility allows students to tailor their educational experience to meet their career goals. Students are also given the opportunity to employ theories learned in the classroom in practical settings through the internship program. Students can work in a variety of fields such as community recreation, state/national parks, military recreation, or the outdoor recreation industry.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS:

General Education Core Requirements (41 Credit Hours)

Major Core Requirements (32 hours)

  • PHED 2XXX - Lifetime Activity course (1 hr)
  • SALM 3210 - Practicum I in Sport and Leisure Management (1 hr)
  • SALM 3211 - Practicum II in Sport and Leisure Management (1 hr)
  • SALM 3220 - Facility and Event Management (3 hrs)
  • SALM 4210 - Legal Issues & Risk Management in Sport & Leisure Management (3 hrs)
  • SALM 4215 - Social Psychology of Sport and Leisure (3 hrs)
  • SALM 4225 - Management of Sport and Leisure Activities (3 hrs)
  • SALM 4250 - Internship in Sport and Leisure Management (12 hrs)
  • PUBH 2030 - First Aid and Emergency Care (3 hrs)

Park and Recreation Management Concentration Requirements (18 hours)

  • SALM 3110 - Interpretation of Cultural and Natural Resources (3 hrs)
  • SALM 3117 - Recreation for Special Populations (3 hrs)
  • SALM 3120 - Outdoor Recreation Skills (3 hrs)
  • SALM 3130 - Natural Resources Management (3 hrs)

Tracks: Choose either the Recreation Administration or Outdoor Leadership track
