Sport Management (graduate)

CONCENTRATION OVERVIEW

The Sport Management Concentration prepares students to assume leadership roles in planning, organizing, and administering consumer-driven and constituent-based initiatives in the sport industry. Such initiatives may include athletic administration at the collegiate and professional levels, motorsports operations (see courses below), facility operations, sport marketing, sport communications and media relations, sport club management, and sporting goods manufacturing and sales. The Sport Management Concentration has a thesis/non-thesis option and may be completed with 36 credit hours. Students who choose the non-thesis option are required to complete written and oral internship assignments as fulfillment of the culminating experience.

MOTORSPORTS OPERATIONS: ETSU – Bristol Motor Speedway Partnership

Graduate Track in Motorsport Operations, Sport Management Concentration

The Department of Kinesiology, Leisure and Sport Sciences at East Tennessee State University, in partnership with Bristol Motor Speedway, has designed a 'graduate track' within the Sport Management concentration to prepare students to enter the field of Motorsports.  Four new motorsport-specific graduate courses are offered: 1) Motorsport Operations, 2) Applied Motorsport Marketing, 3) Public Relations and Mass Media in Motorsport, and 4) Financial Management and Sponsorship in Motorsport. Also, guest speakers are invited from Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway, and field experience options exist at BMS and other motorsport locations.  This creates a unique graduate program that may be the only one of its kind in the United States!

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Regular Admission:
The following are required for admission in the Sport Management Concentration:
·        Undergraduate degree in physical education, exercise science, sport mgmt. or closely related field.
·        GRE scores
·        2.7 cumulative undergraduate grade point average on a 4.0 scale
·        Three letters of recommendation
·        Resume and contact information for at least three academic references
·        Essay explaining goals and reasons for desiring to study with the Department of KLSS and ETSU 

Conditional Admission:
Students who are unable to meet “regular" admission requirements, may be considered for "conditional" admission.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Various forms of financial assistance are available through the Office of Financial Aid. More information may be found at http://www.etsu.edu/finaid/default.asp. In addition, Graduate Assistantships and Tuition Scholarships are available in the Department of Kinesiology, Leisure and Sport Sciences (KLSS) which includes teaching in the Active Lifestyles and Wellness Program or “Fit Kids” program, research assistants with KLSS Faculty, and various other duties. Other opportunities may be available in campus recreation, intercollegiate athletics, student activities, and other campus areas. Application materials for Graduate Assistantship and Tuition Scholarship positions may be obtained from the Program Coordinator.

The Sport Management curriculum blends classroom learning with hands-on internship experience.


Several ETSU interns work with the nearby Bristol Motor Speedway, one of the largest and most popular tracks on the NASCAR circuit.
