Habitat for Humanity ETSU Service Project

ETSU sponsored its first Habitat for Humanity service project in 2007.  The ETSU Habitat for Humanity Homecoming House just 2 miles from the campus The home was completed in October 2007, and the new owner received the keys on October 24, 2007. Students at University School raised money for this project by organizing a SGA car wash.  Faculty purchased blue jean passes to raise money.  University School donated $727.00 through these two projects during August and September 2007.  Other individual contributes were also submitted.  The project continues in 2008 as we make plans for the 2nd Homecoming House Build!  How will you help?  For more information, contact Ms. Blakely, Ms. Horton, or Ms. Shaw; all serve on the ETSU Habitat Steering Committee.

East Tennessean News Article

There are many ways that the ETSU community can assist with this rewarding service project.  Many campus organizations and student groups contribute in unique ways.  Here are a few brainstorming ideas that you might consider.

1.  Purchase a few University School Blue Jean Passes.

2.  Sign up to volunteer at the building site.  You can contact the volunteer coordinator to schedule a time.  Her name is Teresa Brooke Taylor and her email is talort@etsu.edu  The next build starts the last week of August 2008!

3.  Donate food and/or drinks for the volunteers.

4.  Sponsor a student fundraiser for the project...bake sale, car wash, anything that students can participate in through University School.  Minors (under 18) cannot work on the building site without direct supervision of a parent.  A support fundraiser is one way our whole school can help.  Fundraising can occur year-round!

5.  Ask people you know that own businesses to support the project.  For example, Walgreen's donated first aid supplies and bottled water.  It just took one phone call.  Fast Signs donated a banner for the building site.

6.  Forward this information to others that might help!

What a great way to guide our students by example!

Build a home, build a dream for a family, and make the spirit of ETSU Pride live beyond the walls of our own school.

THANK YOU!
