1984-1995        Associate Pastor, Blacksburg Baptist Church, Blacksburg, Virginia       Primary responsibilities included the Ministry through Music and worship planning as well as other pastoral duties.

1979-1981        Directed and taught in his own music studio

1975-1979        Music teacher for Monroe County School System, Monroe County, Georgia. Taught elementary (K-6) classroom music and junior high school chorus.

1970-1971        Music teacher for Washington County School System, Washington County, Georgia. Taught elementary band and junior and senior high school chorus.

PART TIME:

Positions as adjunct faculty in music:

1992 - Bluefield College, Bluefield, Virginia -Taught Choral Arranging and Music Classroom Methods.

1981-1984-The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky-Taught Form and Analysis to masters degree students. Also taught basic music fundamentals in team teaching role in music classes for ministerial students.

1982-1983-The Urseline-Pitt School, Louisville, Kentucky-A year and a half as music teacher for grades kindergarten through twelfth grade. The students were physically and mentally handicapped.

1978-1979-Tift College, Forsyth, Georgia-Three terms teaching Music Education and Music Appreciation.

OTHER AREAS OF EXPERIENCE

Presented church music seminars in Richmond, Virginia, Jacksonville, Florida and at the India Baptist Convention Pastor’s Conference in Cochin, Kerala, India. 

Student teacher supervisor with the Monroe County Public Schools.           

Graduate assistant at Georgia State University in research on the evaluation of music teacher competency.

MUSIC AND THEATRE PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE

Dr. Borden has performed professionally as a trombonist. He also sang for a number of years in the auditioned ensemble "The Johnson City Civic Chorale." 

For the past year and a half, Dr. Borden has been assisting the Little Theatre of Greeneville, Tennessee as acting Artistic Director. He has directed the following productions: "Bell, Book and Candle," "Everybody Loves Opal," "The Homecoming," "High School Musical," "How to Eat Like a Child," "The Spiral Staircase," "The Housekeeper" and "Kilroy Was Here." He also performed roles in "Everybody Loves Opal," The Spiral Staircase," "The Housekeeper" and "Kilroy Was Here." Dr. Borden also oversaw a production of "On Golden Pond."

In 1996, Dr. Borden served as musical director and conductor for the musical "Meet Me In St. Louis," a joint production by University School, ETSU, and the Johnson City Community Theater. He has also served as musical director for a number of other productions with the Johnson City Community Theater to include “Hello, Dolly,” “Time Warp,” “Nunsense,” and “Grease.” He performed a supporting role in "You Can't Take It With You" and in the summer of 2002 sang the lead in the musical “Kiss Me Kate.” In addition, Dr. Borden performed in two musicals based on USO shows as well as the Doctor in a production of "Foxfire" for the Jonesborough Repertory Theater.

At University School, the chorus and instrumental groups have performed many concerts throughout the years on campus, in the community and on tour. Theatrical productions performed by University School students include: "And Then There Was One," "The Sillies," "Charleston," "Sleepy Hollow," "High School Musical," "And Then There Was One, Too," "The Empty Chair," "Fairy Tail TV," "Disaster," "The Monkey's Paw" and "Wishful Thinking."

He has conducted many choral and instrumental groups including the Jasper Jubilee Singers, The Middle Georgia Concert Band, and the Government Issue Chorus. While playing trombone for several years in the Johnson City Community Concert Band, he also served as that organization's assistant director for two years and then the interim director for another two years.

He has toured extensively nationally and internationally with some of the various performance groups he has conducted. These include the Government Issue Chorus as well as other choral and instrumental ensembles from churches and schools. Tours have included many areas of the United States of America, Canada, Great Britain, India and Italy.

The University School Singers in April 2006 successfully completed such a tour to Italy. The chorus competed in the Verona, Italy annual international choral competition. As well as giving two local concerts the chorus won a silver challis in the competition. 

Publically performed compositions include:

"The Sillies": a book musical; O Sinner Man": a band arrangement; "Here in This Place": a sacred cantata; "The Sunday After Easter": a short sacred musical; "Hosea": a sacred opera; "Obed the Gardener": an Easter musical; "A Season of Miracles": a Christmas oratorio; “Sometimes a Light Surprises”, a commissioned anthem; "Gifts of Love": a Christmas cantata; various other compositions and arrangements.
