Curriculum

In 3rd grade, what the State of Tennessee expects the children to be
prepared for and what I expect will be different.  For example, the state multiplication expectations for 3rd grade follow:

A C Use the multiplication facts 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10 efficiently and accurately.

The "A" means this is what the children will be assessed on when they take the Terrific T-CAP (I mean Terrific, be positive) in April.  I have already been working on these facts and most of the children have mastered the above as well as the facts for 3.  The next step will be to improve efficiency.  Currently, some of the children will use skip counting or addition to solve these problems  (not efficient but accurate) but these facts will need to be available for instant recall to allow for advanced math.

My philosophy in regards to curriculum will always be to achieve as much as each child is able.  We will make certain they have all had the opportunity to learn those things the State Department of Tennessee expects, and then we will begin working on 4th grade and beyond.
