| Math 8 Course Syllabus
Ms. Chisholm, 2007-2008
Welcome to Math 8. Prepare yourself for
some challenging work that will move you further along in your
study of mathematics. We are very fortunate to have textbooks
that are directly correlated to the Tennessee Mathematics
Curriculum Standards. Students can find a variety of extra help
on the Internet by accessing the online study tools referenced
on their textbook pages.
Here are some important expectations. You will:
I Come prepared daily with textbook, notebook, pencils, graph
paper, and calculator.
2 Try your best to attend each class.
3 Attend math help when necessary.
4 Write each assignment in your planner.
5 Complete each homework assignment and then check and correct
it in class the next day.
Notebooks
Math notebooks will have five sections. Each section will have
its own tab.
These include:
I Warm-up- work started on as soon as class begins. It will be
dated every day.
2 Homework-middle school heading on each page
3 Class work-example and practice problems will be worked and
each day’s work will be dated
4 Reflections-writing assignments will be given throughout each
nine weeks
5 Tests/Quizzes-all test and quizzes for each nine weeks will be
kept in this section. Students will keep an updated average on
the grading chart kept in this section.
Grading
Grades are based on tests (100 points each), quizzes (25 or 50
points each), homework, notebook check (50 points), and extra
credit (50 points). Homework is checked daily for completeness.
Students check and correct their homework each day and ask
questions when necessary. Unexcused late homework is given a
grade of 70% the next day and no credit after that. At the end
of each nine weeks, a test grade is given for the completed
homework. Homework quizzes are given throughout each nine weeks
where students copy certain problems from homework assignments
that have been checked and corrected. Notebooks will be checked
each nine weeks for a quiz grade. Each nine-week’s grade is
calculated by the student’s total points divided by the total
possible points.
Extra Credit
At the beginning of each nine weeks, there will be one extra
credit opportunity. The assignment will be due no later than the
end of the sixth week of that grading period. If successfully
completed, the extra credit will count as a quiz grade of 50
points out of 50 points. Since this is an extra credit
opportunity, the student may choose to complete it or not.
Math Help
Students may come for math help on Tuesday morning at 7:30 am or
Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 pm.
End-of-the year testing
Students will take Algebra readiness tests to help determine
placement into either Foundations of Mathematics or Algebra I.
In addition to the results on these indicators, the student’s
academic performance will also help in placing each student.
Please keep this information in the back of
your test and quizzes section of your notebook for the entire
year.
