INTRODUCTION
Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth President of The United States. In some cases he is depicted as one of the greatest presidents to have ever served. He was born Feb. 12, 1809, in Hodgenville, Kentucky. His father was uneducated and could hardly sign his name. During Abraham's childhood his father would abuse him and made work very hard. This might have contributed to his disliking slavery, because in some ways he was treated like one. Soon his mother died from drinking poisoned cow's milk. Soon after, Lincoln's father remarried and the family moved to Illinois. Lincoln's step-mother encouraged education greatly (something his father would not imagine taking part of). Abraham taught himself and only had one year of formal education. He would sometimes walk miles just to get a book. Abraham lived a very rough life. He was an extremely hard worker. In 1834 he was elected to the Illinois General Assembly. Soon he met a woman named Marry Todd. Mr. Lincoln and Mary Todd got engaged, but Abe broke off the engagement because he was afraid of marriage. After a couple of years they got back together and got married in 1842.During their marriage three out of their four sons died at early ages (William, Edward, and Tad) during Lincoln's lifetime. In 1846 Lincoln was elected to the House of Representatives. In 1858 he had several debates with Stephen A. Douglas on the issue of slavery. In 1860 he was elected the sixteenth President of The United States of America. During his presidency he had to face civil war, the issue of slavery, and rights for all humans. Mr. Lincoln was assassinated in 1865 by John Wilkes Booth. This happened while Lincoln was watching a play. He was an extraordinary man and if he had lived to see his second term as president, there wouldn't have been a need for Martin Luther King, Jr.
