Introduction
The Wilderness Campaign began in May 1864, and lasted until June 1864. Multiple battles were fought during this time in Virginia.
In May 1864, General Ulysses S. Grant, a Union general, sent General George G. Meade to attack General Robert E. Lee's Confederate army. The Union forces used superior man-power. General Meade lead 100,000 against Lee's army of 70,000 in a woodland called the "Wilderness" - about 80 km from Richmond, Virginia. The battle lasted from May 5th to the 6th. There were 18,000 Union casualties.
Grant ignored losses, and ordered General Meade southeast to the Spotsylvania Court House. 14,000 soldiers died. The battle lasted from May 8th to the 18th.
Grant then ordered General Meade to the Cold Harbor - just north of Richmond. 13,000 died. On June 3rd, there were 12,000 casualties in an eight minute period.
