Offensive Objectives

Our individual and team offensive rules are successful when each player concentrates on each possession on taking care of the ball, execution, and unselfish team play. We look to fast break at every opportunity and always take the high percentage shot. We determine the outcome of the game. We must believe in the system, our coaches, and our teammates. Some points to remember:

  • Handle the ball with sureness.

o       Breakdown the defense by pushing the ball, hitting the first open man, cuts, screens, drives and communication.

o       Get the ball in the paint – dribble penetration & passes.

o       Utilize transition, post play, drive, cutters and offensive rebounds.

o       Shot discipline.

o       We take the shots we want; not what the defense wants. We take rhythm shots. We emphasize lay-ups, straight line drives and uncontested jump shots.

o       Board coverage

o       Crash the glass – 4 crash, 1 back.

o       Our goal is to make more free throws than our opponents attempt.

·        Offensive Principles

o       ATTACK the defense, whether in half-court or full-court situations. Get to the foul line.

o       ROLE DEFINITION: Know who you are. Handle ball with sureness. Hit the first open man. Jump stops and easy passes. We take great shots.

o       SPRINT FLOOR, PITCH AHEAD, RUN WIDE

o       CATCH IN TRIPLE THREAT. Eyes on Rim, Post, Action. Be a threat to score.

o       MOVE WITHOUT THE BALL. Be hard to guard…read defender and create scoring opportunities for teammates. Move with a purpose. Maintain proper spacing.

o       POST MUST: Show hands, show numbers, call for ball.

o       When SCREENING, head-hunt the defender, set the screen and communicate all screens.

o       Post players are always looking to seal (show your numbers) their defensive man.

o       Always know the TIME AND SCORE.

o       DRIBBLE with your head up and see the court. Protect the ball. Don’t waste your dribble. DRIBBLE ONLY WITH A PURPOSE.

o       Make the SAFE and EASY pass. Don't force passes

o       Remember to always acknowledge the passer after you score.

o       Make the JUMP STOP your weapon.

o       BALL SCREENS are always an option. Pick & roll screener always goes to the basket.

o       ANTICPATE and REBOUND all shots.

o       The shot-fake and backboard are your friends – use them.

·        Zone Attack

o       Look to run each possession.

o       Be patient

o       High Post / Short Corner

o       Attack from behind zone

o       Replace / crack back (European cut)

o       Pass fake, shot fake

o       Reverse ball quickly…use the high post when available

o       Penetrate and flash the gaps

o       Screen the zone

o       Utilize the skip pass to reverse the ball and then look inside.

o       Wings flatten out when ball goes to high post.

o       Shot discipline

o       Attack the offensive boards
