Urgent!  Volunteers Needed for Saturday, November 7th!!

Hello University School Families and Friends,

The Second Harvest Food Bank™ and University School need your help! University School has begun a food drive to help members of the surrounding eight counties served by the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee™. This food drive is part of a friendly competition between area schools. Last year, the schools in this area raised over 86,000 pounds of food in Second Harvest’s single largest food drive event! This is University School’s first year of participation and we would love your help and support in making it successful.

University School will begin accepting food and monetary donations at designated drop-off points throughout the school on Monday, October 26th.  We will have student volunteers positioned in front of the school every morning and afternoon until Friday, November 6th to add to the convenience of dropping off your donations. We want to encourage your family to donate!  We also ask you to encourage other family, friends, and neighbors to donate as well.

Second Harvest Food Bank requests a variety of canned vegetables and fruits, juices, tuna, canned meals, pork and beans, stews, peanut butter, etc. We need to THINK HEAVY!  There is a limit of 1,000 pounds of flour and 1,000 pounds of sugar per school. PLEASE NOTE: NO Perishable Items, NO Pet Food, NO Clothing, NO Bulk Items, and NO Soda or Water!

As a part of the food drive, local Wal-Mart™ stores are allowing students from schools in this area to collect food donations from 8:00am until 4:00pm at the entrances of their stores. University School has been scheduled on Saturday, October 24th and Saturday, November 7th at the new Wal-mart™ on West Market Street (11E) in Johnson City. Customers who wish to donate will be given a bag to place their donations into. After the customer purchases the items, the cashiers will place them back into the bag and our students will accept that bag as customers exit the store. We are asking all middle and high school parents to encourage their children to sign up for at least one 2-hour shift to assist in this venture. Signup sheets for student volunteers are located in the front office. Adult supervision is also needed on these dates. Please consider donating your time to this worthy cause. If you are willing to act as a supervisor, please contact Mike Roberts by email (robertsm@etsu.edu) or office phone (439-7054). If you cannot reach me by phone, please leave a message with a contact number and I will return your call as soon as possible.

We are in the process of planning other events to maximize donations. I will keep you informed as the plans are solidified.

Please help University School stamp out hunger in our area. With the state of our economy, requests for assistance are at an all time high. Let’s come together and show how much University School cares for those in need! Thank you for your time and support.

Sincerely,

Mike Roberts
