From the Counseling Office……

Tennessee Governor’s Schools for Sophomores and Juniors

The Governor’s Schools offer selected gifted and talented high school students intensive learning experiences in the Humanities, Math and Science, Arts, International Studies, Scientific Exploration of Tennessee Heritage, Prospective Teaching, Emerging Technologies, Engineering, Information Technology Leadership, and Agricultural Sciences, Computational Physics and Scientific Models and Data Analysis.

All students in the tenth and eleventh grades who would like to participate in a challenging and high-intensity summer program in one of the twelve areas should obtain application(s) online at

http://www.tn.gov/education/govschools.  Please turn in the counselor portion to Ms. Shaw no later than November 6 for submission by the deadline.

PLAN/PSAT Testing for Sophomores & Juniors

The PLAN (pre-ACT) will be taken by all Sophomores during the school day on Wednesday, October 7, 2009.  The PLAN is a mandatory exam required by the state and is administered free-of-charge.  The PLAN gives predictor scores for the ACT, as well as excellent study information for obtaining the best possible score on the ACT.

The PSAT (pre-SAT) will be given on October 14, 2009 and is recommended for Juniors as excellent practice for the SAT.  The PSAT must also be taken in the Junior year in order to qualify as a National Merit Scholar.  Although the PSAT is recommended for Juniors, registration is open to other grade levels as well.  The PSAT will provide a predictor score for the SAT as well as study information.  The cost for this exam is $15.  Students must register with Ms. Robinson and pay for the exam at the time of registration.  Students may register between October 5 and October 12—no earlier.

EXPLORE Testing for 8th Graders

Eighth graders will take the EXPLORE exam at school on October 21.  The EXPLORE offers both a vocational assessment and a predictor score for the ACT college admissions exam.  Results will help students to make future academic choices to keep them on track for college admission.

State Sponsored ACT Testing for Juniors

The State of Tennessee will again be providing a state ACT testing date when Juniors may take it free of charge.  The state testing day will be March 9, 2010.  Unfortunately, the testing date and all make-up dates fall within our spring break window.  University School will provide the ACT on March 9, and we encourage all Juniors to be available on that date to take the exam.  However, if for any reason you cannot be present on March 9, you will have the opportunity to get a voucher to take the exam for free by registering for the national exam on either February 6 or April 10.  Please see Ms. Shaw to get a voucher to register for the ACT if you cannot be present on March 9.

Gateway/EOC/TCAP Results for Grades 3-12

Results for Gateways, EOC Exams, and TCAP will be sent home with students the week of September 8.  Please ask your student (or search their backpack!) for the copy of the test results.  Please feel free to contact your student’s teacher or Ms. Shaw if you have any questions.

College Visits for Juniors and Seniors

University School will be hosting visits from the following colleges in the upcoming months.  Juniors and Seniors may sign-up to attend college sessions with their first period teacher or directly with Ms. Shaw if they do not have a traditional first period class.  Though attending a college visit is an excused absence, students will, as always, be responsible for requesting, completing, and submitting any missed school work according to applicable departmental policies.  Please encourage your student to be selective when signing up for college visits.

College Admission Tips for Seniors

  1. 1.     Be sure to schedule a senior interview ASAP with Ms. Shaw!!!!

  2. 2.     Finalize your college choices by the end of September.

  3. 3.    Update your online resume at kuder.com.  Contact Ms. Shaw if you don’t have your username/password.

  4. 4.    If you are not getting lots of emails from Ms. Shaw something is wrong!  Please email her at shawa@etsu.edu to verify your email if you are having a problem.

  5. 5.    Complete college applications, essays, and all college visits during fall break.

  6. 6.    Request all college recommendations from Ms. Shaw or other teachers at least 3 weeks in advance of the deadline.  Please provide a copy of your resume and information about the colleges to which you are applying.

  7. 7.    Look for scholarships through your church, parents workplace, your workplace, the internet, books in Ms. Shaw’s office, and Ms. Shaw’s website.

  8. 8.    Avoid scholarship scams!  Don’t pay anyone to help you with scholarship searches.  It is probably a scam.  Look at the Better Business Bureau website if you want to check out a specific company.

  9. 9.    Take any SAT subject exams that you may need for college admission.  These are usually required for schools where admission is more competitive, but it is a good idea to check for all the schools to which you want to apply.

  10. 10.  Check out last year’s College Information Night through the miracle of video J at http://151.141.7.45/asxgen/uh/etsucb.etsu.edu_03Mar09_17.50.wmv

  11. 11.  Apply for Tennessee scholarships at www.collegepaystn.com.  You will apply for your Hope (lottery scholarship) when you do your FAFSA in January. You will receive more information about financial aid in November, but plan on attending the Washington County Financial Aid Night on December 8.

  12. 12.  Be aware of all deadlines!  They are earlier than you think!
