  2009 - 2010 Scholarship List

School Specific Scholarships:

Univ. of Tenn. Knoxville-

To be considered a priority applicant for all University of Tennessee scholarships, including the Chancellor's 4-year scholarships, all entering freshman must submit both the Entering Freshman Scholarship Application and the UT Admissions Application with all supporting documentation, postmarked by no later than November 1 of the senior year of high school.

All applications received by no later than December 1 will be reviewed for all university scholarships (general, college & departmental), excluding the Chancellor's and the McClanahan Scholarship.

Chancellor’s Scholarships:

ü  Named for Frederick T. Bonham, Class of 1909, The University of Tennessee Law School. This scholarship is a four-year award based on academic merit. It provides six (6) new recipients with $5,000 per year. Selections are made in the spring by the UT General Scholarship Committee.

ü  Average GPA of recipients of the Bonham Scholarship is 4.0, with an average ACT/SAT of 31/1360.

·         Holt Scholars 

ü  Named for Dr. Andrew D. ("Andy") Holt, former President of the University of Tennessee, this is a four-year academic merit and leadership-based scholarship. It provides four selected students with $5,000 per year.

  • Manning Scholars 

ü  The Manning Scholarship honors Peyton Manning, a 1998 alumnus, who distinguished himself through academic achievement, community involvement, and athletic accomplishments.

ü  Scholarship assistance is $7,000 per year for four years. Minimum eligibility for the Manning Scholarship is a 3.7 High School GPA and 29 ACT (1280 SAT CR+M).

  • Neyland Scholars

ü  The Neyland Scholarship is a four-year award based on academic merit and leadership, and is awarded to six (6) new recipients each year.

ü  Assistance is $7,000 per year for four years. Selections are made in the spring by the UT General Scholarship Committee. Average GPA of recipients is 4.0, with an average ACT/SAT of 31/1360.

  • Oldham Scholars

ü  Oldham Scholars may select any academic major. Scholarship assistance is $8,000 a year for four years, plus $1,500 stipend for travel support during the summer following the sophomore year. Oldham Scholars must be Tennessee residents.

ü  Each year, Oldham Scholars participate in an excursion to a major metropolitan area to attend cultural events. Oldham Scholars are encouraged to further develop their leadership abilities through involvement in campus and community activities. Logistical benefits include preregistration, library, computing, and housing priorities, peer mentoring, and honors dinners.

  • Roddy Scholars

ü  The Roddy Scholarship is a four year award, based on academic merit and leadership, that provides $5,000 per year. Four (4) new recipients are selected each year in the spring by the UT General Scholarship Committee. Average GPA for recipients is a 4.0, with ACT/SAT scores of 33/1450.

  • Tennessee Scholars

ü  Twenty-five entering students, including graduating high school students and transfer students, are chosen each year to become Tennessee Scholars. Selection is based upon academic merit, extracurricular and community activity, and creativity.

ü  Scholarship support is $5,000 per year for four years, or for five years in standard five-year degree programs. Minimum eligibility for this award is a 3.7 High School GPA and 29 ACT (1280 SAT).

Institutional Scholarships:

  • Volunteer Scholarship

ü  Awards are four-year scholarships in the amount of $2,500 per year, which may be added to other scholarships awarded by UT. Available to Tennessee residents. Students must apply for admission by the December 1 regular admission application deadline. Additionally, recipients who show financial need, based on the FAFSA submitted by March 1, may receive an additional need based supplement for a maximum total of $3,000.

ü  Eligible students from the previous year represented the top 16% of the in-state, incoming freshman class and were selected from a top group of applicants with a Core GPA range of 3.65 to 4.0 and an ACT range of 32-36.

*The Volunteer Scholarship cannot be combined with the University Scholarship

  • University Scholarship

ü  Awards are four-year scholarships in the amount of $1,000 per year, which may be added to other scholarships awarded by UT. Available to Tennessee residents. Students must apply for admission by the December 1 regular admission application deadline. Additionally, recipients who show financial need, based on the FAFSA submitted by March 1, may receive an additional need based supplement for a maximum total of $3,000.

ü  Eligible students from the previous year represented 23% of the in-state, incoming freshman class and were selected from a top group of applicants with a Core GPA range of 3.5 to 4.0 and an ACT range of 27-31.

*The University Scholarship cannot be combined with the Volunteer Scholarship.

  • Tennessee Pledge Scholarship

ü  To achieve this accessibility for qualified students from low-income families, the University of Tennessee offers need-based scholarships to members of the fall entering freshman class who are Tennessee residents.

ü  These need-based scholarships are offered to admitted students with a family adjusted gross income of up to $36,000, which equates to approximately 200% of the federal poverty level.

ü  The scholarship, when combined with other federal, state, and institutional aid, will cover a student’s mandatory costs—tuition, fees, room and board, and a book allowance as determined by UT—without the use of student loans.

  • Achieve the Dream Grant

ü  Awards are based on academic achievement and financial need in the form of four-year grants with a maximum amount of $3,000 per year, when combined with the UT Volunteer or University Scholarships.  Available to Tennessee residents. 

ü  Students must apply for admission by the December 1 regular admission application deadline and also submit the FAFSA by March 1, prior to enrolling, in order to qualify.

  • Presidential Scholarship

ü  Awarded to National Merit Finalists and National Achievement Finalists; four-year scholarship valued at $2,000 per year, which may be added to other scholarships awarded by UT.

ü   Available to both Tennessee residents and non-residents. Finalists must name UT Knoxville as their first college choice with National Merit Corporation and must have applied for admission to UT Knoxville by the December 1 regular admission application deadline.

 

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga-

ü  Students applying for these scholarships MUST submit their UTC admission application, $30 application fee, official high school transcript, and ACT or SAT scores by the February 1 deadline. Students who do this will be considered for the award listed below: 3.75 GPA and 30 ACT composite (1340 SAT) will receive $9,500 which includes Tennessee HOPE lottery funds. Out of state students will receive an award of $6,000.

ü  Students applying for these scholarships MUST submit their UTC admission application, $30 application fee, official high school transcript, and ACT or SAT scores by the February 1 deadline. Students who do this will be considered for the award listed below: 3.5 GPA and 26 ACT composite (1190 SAT) will receive $8,000 which includes Tennessee HOPE lottery funds. Out of state students will receive an award of $4,500.

  • Chattanooga YES! Scholarship

ü  First-time freshmen who complete their Admissions application and Financial Aid file (including the FAFSA) by April 1 of their senior year will be considered for the $3000 per year award.

ü  Each year the University Honors (UHON) Program awards exclusive 4-year renewable scholarships to freshmen selected for the UHON Program. These scholarships are renewable for up to eight semesters, as long as the student remains in good standing with the UHON Program.

ü  The student must maintain at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA and make at least 24 hours progress toward graduation each year.

ü  To be considered for a UHON Scholarship, a student must submit both the University Honors Program Application and the UTC Application for Undergraduate Admissions no later than December 15 of the senior year in high school. (Students are encouraged to submit both applications by the Undergraduate Admissions Office "Early Bird" deadline of Nov. 15.) Selection for UHON Scholarships is based on the quality of the complete UHON application file, which includes high school academic record, ACT or SAT scores, teacher recommendations, extracurricular activities, essays and interviews.

ü  UHON Scholarships can be combined with Chancellor's Scholarships and Provost's Scholarships, and with TN Lottery Scholarships, as long as the total award does not exceed the cost of attendance as determined by the Financial Aid Office. Most UHON students receive a "full ride"--a scholarship package that covers the cost of on-campus housing, the required meal plan, books and all maintenance and enrollment fees (what most people call "tuition").

  • Chemistry Scholarships

ü  Awards of $14,000 ($3,500 per year for four years) will be presented to as many as three entering freshmen majoring in Chemistry. The awards are renewable over a four-year period and can be added to other University scholarships and the Tennessee Lottery scholarship.

ü  In order to be eligible for a Grote Chemistry Scholarship, a student must: complete a course in high school chemistry with an A or B, attain a high school grade point average of 3.5 or above, have a composite score of 26 or above on the ACT exam (or SAT equivalent), and declare chemistry as the major at UTC.

ü  Application process for 2010 has not begun. Look for the application to be posted in October.

ü  The University of Tennessee Alumni Association is proud to announce several newly established scholarships:

®    The Student Alumni Scholarship – Available at all UT undergraduate campuses

®    “Student Leaders become Alumni Leaders” UT Alumni Scholarship – UT Chattanooga

®    UT Alumni Excellence Scholarship –UT Knoxville

®    University of Tennessee Alumni Association Transfer Scholarship –UT Martin

ü  A special scholarship application is not required for UT Alumni Association Scholarships. The student’s admissions application serves as the UTAA scholarship application. Campus selection committees evaluate and select recipients based on the admissions applications.

·         Academic Service Scholarship Program

ü  Students on this scholarship program receive a $2100 per semester scholarship ($4200 per year); in return they must provide 100 hours of service to the university per semester.

ü  Your service position is chosen through the same group of approved positions as Federal Work-Study, but you receive your funds up-front and only work 100 hours per semester.

ü  Your GPA coming into UTC must be a minimum 3.0 and you must have a record of service to your school and/or your community.

ü  Your application is a letter of interest to the Director of Financial Aid along with your resume or vita outlining your previous service commitments and three letters of reference. All applications are due by May 1 of each year. Recipients are chosen in June before school starts in August, and are notified by the Director of Financial Aid.

ü  Music Scholarships

®    Students need to reserve a date and time to be eligible to audition. A student need not be majoring in music to qualify for a music scholarship. To schedule, please call (423)425-4601 or email Nancy Leamon.

ü  Mathematics Department Scholarships

ü  NSF Engineering Scholarship

®    Deadline: February 27, 2009

ü  One-time Housing Stipend

®    Additional $1000 Housing stipend for all entering freshmen who live on-campus and receive the Chancellor’s or Provost’s Scholarship.

®    Students must reside in campus housing to receive the award.

®    The award is a one year, one time allotment.

®    It can be used at any UTC residence hall including UTC Place.

 

 

Middle Tennessee State University-

ü  The following four scholarships do not require a separate application and is awarded to first-time freshmen who meet academic requirements.

ü  Students who are interested must have an admission application, official ACT and/or SAT test scores, and an official sixth-semester transcript on file in the Admissions Office.

ü   Priority consideration will be given to students who apply for admission and submit test scores and transcripts by December 1, 2009. However, students who apply for admission by February 15, 2010, may be considered if funding is available.

ü  Scholarship recipients are required to complete 75 hours of service to MTSU each semester (except as noted). It rounds out to about five service hours per week.

ü   ACT and SAT scores (without writing sub-scores) through the December test date will be considered for scholarship purposes.

ü  Chancellor Scholarship

®    The Chancellor Scholarship is awarded to first-time freshmen applicants who have an ACT composite score of 32 or higher (or a 1410 or higher SAT score) and at least a 3.75 cumulative grade point average (GPA) through the end of his or her junior year of high school. The award is $5,000 per academic year.

ü  Presidential Scholarship

®    The Presidential Scholarship is awarded to first-time freshmen applicants who have an ACT composite score of 29 or higher (or a 1280 or higher SAT score) and at least a 3.75 cumulative grade point average (GPA) through the end of his or her junior year of high school. The award is $4,000 per academic year.

ü  Academic Service Scholarship

®    To be considered for this scholarship, a student must have an ACT composite score of 27 or higher (or a 1210 or higher SAT score) and a high school GPA of at least 3.75 through the end of his or her junior year of high school. The award is $3,000 per academic year.

ü  Valedictorian-Salutatorian Scholarship

®    Academic Service Scholarships in the amount of $3,000 per year will be awarded to Tennessee high school valedictorians and salutatorians who have an ACT composite of 23 or higher (or a 1060 or higher SAT score). Please ensure that the Admissions Office is notified prior to February 15 of rank in class.

ü  Awarded to first-time freshmen who meet academic and diversity requirements.

ü   Recipients will be selected for the scholarship based on Tennessee residency, academic requirements, financial need, and contribution to the diversity of the university.

ü  Recipient must be a graduate of a Tennessee high school, have a 21 ACT (or a 980 SAT) or 3.0 GPA, meet all other Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship requirements, have an EFC of 12,000 or less, and demonstrate commitment to promoting diversity at MTSU.

ü  Recipients of the DREAM Scholarship will receive funding equal to full tuition plus $500 per semester, through a combination of federal, state, and University funds

ü  No weekly service obligation is required.

ü  The Buchanan Fellowship represents the highest award given to an entering student in the University Honors College.

ü  Twenty applicants are chosen as Buchanan Fellows and they receive: 1) full payment of tuition and fees even if tuition rises in the future; coverage of out-of-state fees where applicable; (2) a $1000 per year book allowance; (3) consideration for study abroad scholarships; (4) access to the resources of the Undergraduate Fellowships Office; (5) access to Honors College special lectures and events; and (6) support for admissions preparation to graduate and professional schools.

ü  To compete for a Buchanan Fellowship, an applicant must:

§  apply for undergraduate admission to Middle Tennessee;

§  complete and return the Buchanan application form to the Honors College by December 1 of the year prior to fall enrollment;

§  have a high school GPA greater than or equal to 3.5;

§  have a composite ACT greater than or equal to 25 (SAT greater than or equal to 1160);

§  provide an official transcript of all high school work completed; and

§  provide a personal statement.

®      Selection based on a competitive examination given to high school seniors over biological principles and concepts.  Each scholarship is restricted to incoming Biology Majors.

·         Vice Presidents’ Scholarship (Residential Scholarship)
$2,000 per year             26-27 ACT            AND       4.00 GPA

ü  This scholarship is for graduates of a Tennessee high school and is renewable for three additional years as long as the student maintains 12 credit hours each semester with a 3.0 cumulative GPA and completes 75 hours of university service.  This scholarship is applied to a student’s residence hall fees and is only renewable if the student continues to live in a residence hall.

·         Admissions Academic Service Scholarship
$1,000 per year             26-27 ACT            AND       3.50-3.99 GPA

ü  This scholarship is for graduates of a Tennessee high school and is renewable for three additional years if the student maintains 12 credit hours each semester with a 3.0 cumulative GPA and completes 25 hours of university service.

·         Alumni Legacy Service Scholarship (In-State Alumni Parent)
$1,000 per year             24-25 ACT            AND       3.50-4.00 GPA

ü  This scholarship is awarded to a student whose parent, grand-parent, or step-parent graduated from TTU.  It is renewable for three additional years if the student maintains 12 credit hours each semester with a 3.0 cumulative GPA and completes 25 hours of service. 

·         Golden Eagle Excellence Scholarship
$2,500 per year

ü  These competitive scholarships are awarded to Tennessee high school graduates to increase academic quality and diversity which enriches the educational experience and promotes quality education for our campus.  These awards are made to underrepresented groups as defined in our Scholarship Recruitment Plan.  For additional information on these scholarships, contact the Scholarship Office at scholarships@tntech.edu.

·         Leadership Scholarship
$1,000 one year only

ü  This scholarship will be awarded to a limited number of entering freshmen who have demonstrated outstanding leadership potential.

 

East Tennessee State University

  • Academic Performance Scholarship for Freshmen

ü  Guaranteed APS

®    Entering freshmen with an ACT score of 28 or SAT score of 1240 or higher and a GPA of 3.5 or higher will be offered a Guaranteed APS.

®    To be eligible students must complete the admissions application process, including submission of the application for admission, application fee, high school transcript and ACT/SAT scores by December 15.

®    Students who miss the December 15 deadline may be eligible for a competitive APS award, but must submit a scholarship application by February 15.

ü  Competitive APS

®    To be considered, applicants generally rank 1 or 2 in their graduating class or score a minimum ACT Composite of 26 (or 1170 SAT) while earning a minimum high school grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

®    To be considered for this scholarship, students must submit a scholarship application online by the deadline.

®    The application deadline is February 15. Late applications will not be considered.

  • Departmental Scholarships

  • University Honors Scholars Program

ü  For this program, only 22 incoming freshmen are selected as University Honors Scholars each year

and only those students who have a minimum ACT score of 29 or SAT score 1280, high school GPA

of at least a 3.5 and demonstrate evidence of community and leadership activities will receive an

application to the Honors program.

ü  This program provides a limited number of in-state and out-of-state scholarships. You will also

need to submit a portfolio or other evidence of your artistic abilities.

ü  The areas of artistry are: Music, Fine Arts, Theatre, Broadcasting & Film, and

ü  After you complete the  application for admission to ETSU, review the minimum requirements for admission to the Arts Scholars Program to make sure you are eligible, then complete the Arts Scholars Program Application located at: http://www.etsu.edu/honors/arts/howtoapply.asp

ü  This program for transfer students requires a minimum GPA (cumulative) of 3.5 from your current institution; AND an associate degree OR at least 30 earned credit hours.

  • Honors-in-Discipline (HID) programs

ü  These are departmental or college honors programs that are administered by coordinators

 of specific disciplines (not through the Scholarship Office.)

Google Doodle Scholarship

Students K-12 are welcome to enter an art contest to create a Google Doodle around the theme “What if...”

Award: $10,000 scholarship and your Google Art displayed online for a day.

Deadline: School must register by March 17, entries may be submitted from February 3,2009  to May 21, 2009.

Burger King Scholars Award

Deadline: Applications and accompanying materials must be postmarked no later than Feb. 1, 2010

Award: $1000

Requirements: For high School Seniors who have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 higher, work part-time for a minimum of 10 hrs per week OR 40 weeks per year, who are actively involved in community service activities, demonstrates financial Aid (1040 form required) and have plans to enroll in a two or four year college, university, technical school by fall of the application year.

KFC’s Colonel’s Scholars Award

Deadline: Online application available from December1, 2009 through February 10, 2010.

Award: up to $5,000 per year for tuition, fees, books, and room and board.

Requirements:  Must be a graduating senior, minimum GPA of 2.75 or higher, is planning to enroll in a public, in-state college and pursue a bachelor’s degree no later than 09/30/10 and is a U.S Citizen or permanent resident. Awards be announced by June 2010.

First Freedom Student Competition

Deadline:  Monday, November 23, 3009

Award: $3000, $1,500 and $750

Requirements: a national essay contest offered to 9-12 graders. Students are asked to write about international religious freedom. Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

Deadline: November 2, 2009

Award: $1000

Requirements: Available to any students grades 5-12 who have been active volunteers in community service activities over the past year. Students interested submit scholarships online at http://spirit.prudential.com OR www.principals.org/prudential   by November 2, 2009. Then submit application to the counseling office, where applications will be submitted to the principal for one 5-8 grader and one 9-12 grader will be chosen to be certified by the principal. The two students chosen will be eligible to win an unrestricted award of $1000 or more. (Competing at the state level.)

 

Best Buy Scholarship

Deadline:  Check website in January 2010 for more information about this years program

Award:  1,500 $1,500 scholarships and 51 $10,000 scholarships

Requirements:  minimum 2.5 GPA, commitment and involvement in volunteer community service or work experience. Open to 9-12 grades.  Apply online at www.bestbuy.com/scholarships

 

2009 Miss Tennessee Teen USA Pageant

Deadline: Pageant will be held on October 1-3, 2009

Award: $1,000 cash award and impressive scholarships to various universities, as well as appearances throughout the state.

Requirements: Entrants must be single, never married nor have given birth to a child, a United States citizen and at least a six-month resident of Tennessee.  They must also be at least 14 and less than 19 as of February 1, 2010

Harold Conner Scholarship

Award: Approximately 30 awards, between $500 and $3,000.

Rotary International Youth Exchange

Students interested in becoming Rotary Youth Exchange students should begin by contacting a local Rotary club to learn more about exchange opportunities and requirements in their area. Students ages 15-25 are eligible.
