Dear University School Families,
As you know with each new school year there
are new changes. This is no different for the cafeteria. I’m sure you
as parents have read and heard about problems of childhood obesity.
School food service directors and supervisors have worked together to
make changes on menus and other items in the cafeteria to make foods a
healthier choice for students.
Studies show the age groups that are at risk for
childhood obesity are children in kindergarten through fourth grade. On
this note there are changes that have been made in the cafeteria. This
school year the following items will no longer be sold.
·
Little Debbie Snack Cakes
·
Slushies
·
Ice Creams
·
Pringles
·
Bagged chips
·
The $1.75 sliced pizza.
In school cafeterias, students tend to charge on
their lunch accounts. This particular issue has gotten out of control,
so this is what has been implemented. Kindergarten through fourth grade
will receive a peanut butter sandwich and white milk when their charges
reach a negative of $5.00. For people who are allergic to peanut
butter, a cheese sandwich will be given. Before the student reaches a
negative of $5.00, a letter will be sent home with the child. Failure
to take care of your child’s charges will result in your child receiving
a peanut butter sandwich and milk everyday until money is paid. For
students in grades fifth through twelfth, there will be absolutely no
charging allowed.
Enclosed is an Ala-Carte list to let you and your
students know what the prices are. Ala-Carte items are not part of a
reimbursable meal for paid, free, or reduced students, but can be
purchased as an extra item. I am also including information to let you
know what constitutes a reimbursable meal for the $1.65, $1.75, $1.85
lunch price, and for free and reduced. Prices for grades (K-4th)
- $1.65, (5th-8th) - $1.75, and (9th-12th)
- $1.85.
