AP CALCULUS SYLLABUS

Lee Wells – Instructor

                                                                                  

GOALS

·         To nurture students’ appreciation for mathematics and develop critical thinking ability

·         To prepare students to earn college credit by excelling on the AP Calculus exam

 

TEXTBOOK: Calculus (Larson, Hostetler, Edwards. Published by Houghton Mifflin)

 

TOPICS: Derivatives and Integrals (If it’s not related to one of these, it’s not Calculus!)

 

MATERIALS (Bring to every class meeting!)


 
  • 3-ring binder dedicated to Calculus                               
  • Pencil(s) and eraser!
  • Graphing calculator (TI-8x)

 

 

HOMEWORK

  • Assigned every class period (very few exceptions) and posted online
  • May or may not be collected
  • Assessed on effort and completion
  • Students completing ALL assignments in a quarter earn 2% on their quarter grade and a HW coupon.
  • Students missing FOUR assignments lose 4% on their quarter grade.

 

Grades will be based total accumulated points in the following two categories:

 

QUICK QUIZZES (10 pts.)

  • Frequent, unannounced, short assessments of mastery of limited content
  • Questions/problems will be similar to HW.
  • Scores < 10 will be assigned a letter grade (A = 9.7; B = 9; C = 8; D = 7; F = 6.5)

 

QUIZZES (40-60 pts.) and TESTS (80-100 pts.)

  • Quizzes may be unannounced. Tests, which cover more material, will always be announced.
  • A test or quiz can be made up before or after school in the case of an excused absence. Please refer to the Student Handbook for guidelines for make up work. Make up arrangements are the responsibility of the student.

 

                        MISCELLANEOUS:

  • All work turned in is to be done in pencil.
  • Where applicable, students must show work to receive credit.

 

EXTRA HELP:

  • MON/WED/FRI in room 306 from 2:45-3:30.  (Late arrivals will not be allowed in the room.)
  • Students will not be permitted to work on HW during help sessions.

 

UNIVERSITY SCHOOL GRADING SCALE

            A                     Excellent                       93-100

            B                      Good                            85-92

            C                      Average                       75-84

            D                     Poor                             70-74

            F                      Failing                           69 and below

 


 

I am excited about the opportunity to teach you this material, and I am confident that you can succeed.  Although this class will move at a fast pace, necessitating your total involvement and undivided attention, I need to know when you are confused, so please ask questions!!
