Junior Bucs win Furman Invite cross country meet

University High’s boys cross team won the Purple Division of the 37th Annual Furman Invitational high school meet on Saturday on the Furman Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.

Leading the Junior Bucs at the No. 1 and 2 positions was Carter McVeigh finishing 8th overall with a time of 16:57, and freshman, Seth Hilbert running 17:33, and finishing 13th overall.

UH overcame Athens Christian because of their 3, 4 and 5 runners. Brian Smith finished 23rd with a time of 17:55, with freshman Gabe Perry right behind in 24th (17:56) to pull UH even. Alden Collins finished 44th (18:27) to give UH a seven-point edge for the victory.

Science Hill standout runner Michael Mansy finished second in the race (16:10), helping the Hilltoppers to ninth place. Devon Woodmancy finished 15th in 17:45.

David Crockett grabbed the top two spots in the boys Black Division to win that race. Sean Duffy finished well ahead of the field (17:41) to take first, while Casey Carnella was next in 18:55. Matt Thomas was 7th (19:43), Rico Vaquero 10th (21:00) and David Matheson was 11th (21:02).

University High’s girls team finished second in the Black Division race, led by Landry Loving’s 5th-place showing (22:31). Kirby Brosmore was 6th (22:47), Katie Pitts 10th (24:30) and Sterlin Elliott was 12th (24:51).
