Future Students of
University School
 Welcome to the ETSU University
School.
University School is a K-12 laboratory school on
the campus of East Tennessee State University
that operates on a year-round schedule.
University School is also a mathematics and
science signature school. We provide a rigorous
high school program that requires more math and
science courses than is normally required for a
high school diploma. The 2008-2009 school year
begins on July 9, 2008.
If you would like your child to attend
University School, please pick up an
application in the school office or download
it from our website. The completed form must be
received by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 29,
2008. A drawing will be conducted in March by
school employees and parents to determine which
applicants will be invited to interview for
openings in each grade. Parents will be notified
in April whether or not their child was chosen
for an interview. Admission will be determined
following the interview and a review of all
pertinent student information. Admissions
beginning with the 2009-2010 ninth graders will
be based on meeting the admissions criteria for
potential success in a mathematics and science
signature school.
If you would like further information about
University School’s application process or
enrollment policy, please call (423) 439-4271.
East Tennessee State University and University
School are fully in accord with the belief that
educational and employment opportunities should
be available to all eligible persons without
regard to age, sex, color, race, religion,
national origin, disability, or veteran status.

University School is a "lab school."
That is, a school that teaches in
conjunction with East Tennessee State
University's College of Education. We
have a special responsibility to model
exemplary instructional practices to
pre-service teachers at East Tennessee
State University and public
practitioners in the region and nation.
As ETSU's College of
Education K-12 laboratory school,
University School is an educational
community in which all persons are
encouraged to achieve their highest
academic potential and to become
productive, responsible citizens.
University School of East Tennessee
State University serves a dual function.
1. The primary function of
the school is to provide a rich and
varied curriculum that promotes the
continuous academic, social, and
emotional growth of each child in grades
K-12.
2. The second function is to
help the College of Education at East
Tennessee State University achieve its
mission of preparing professional
educators by:
(a) Providing university students with
opportunities to observe innovative
instructional practices;
(b) Providing university students
opportunities to work with and teach
K-12 grade pupils under the direction of
skilled mentor teachers;
(c) Serving as a research laboratory for
the advancement of programs and new
ideas in the field of education; and
(d) Serving in a leadership role for the
educational community by developing and
demonstrating exemplary instructional
practices.
The number of University
School faculty has grown from four
teachers in 1911 to more than forty
today. The student enrollment is
approximately 540.
Educators in contemporary
schools encounter new challenges every
day. Unfortunately, yesterday's
solutions are not always effective in
solving today's problems. It is
important that we as a community of
parents, teachers, support personnel,
administrators, and students embrace
together the opportunity to face these
educational challenges. The faculty,
administration, and staff of University
School welcome your participation. We
hope you will communicate with us openly
and will become actively involved in
your children's education.
University School is academically
oriented and college preparatory focused.
Therefore, potential students and their
parents should be committed to academic
excellence. A vocational curriculum
track is not available at University
School.
