News - Jean Smith

Congratulations to Ms. Jean Smith, recipient of the ETSU College of Education Outstanding Faculty Award for Service.  The award was received on April 15th, during the College of Education Honors Day Awards ceremony.

Ms. Smith has taught fourth grade at University School for the past nine years.  She came to us after teaching Kindergarten in Washington County for 22 years, serving as a faculty member in the ETSU Human Development and Learning Department, and also previously serving as Director for the  National Storytelling Center in Jonesborough, TN.

Fourth grade students at University School love Ms. Smith.  They  especially enjoy participating in the 4th grade drama each year depicting the Creation of the Constitution, in which the students dress as delegates and recount details of the historical event through word and song.

Ms. Smith has announced her retirement from University School, effective the end of this school year.  She will be greatly missed!  Thank you, Ms. Smith, for your contribution to our school and congratulations on winning the Service Award!!!

The following is the Letter of Nomination for the award:

March 19, 2008

Dear Nominating Committee,

Please consider my nomination of Jean Smith for the Faculty Service Award.  Jean has been the 4th grade teacher at University School for nine years and has been an educator for thirty years.  She is tenured by ETSU and is also Nationally Board Certified.  Jean will be retiring at the end of this term.

Jean’s outstanding service has been in the area of school improvement.  She coauthored University School’s current innovative school improvement plan and has dedicated untold hours toward implementation of the plan over the last four years.  This has involved working with a variety of faculty cohorts, coordinating with the administration, attending inservice training, documentation of progress, and presentations to both local and national audiences.

The vision for the plan is that student achievement at University School will continually improve over the next five years enabling us to accomplish our goal of becoming an exemplary school.  Jean’s efforts and motivational techniques made a significant impact on University School’s outstanding gains in student academic success.

Below is a chart showing University School TVAAS ratings over the four years that the plan has been in effect.  These ratings reflect collective student growth rates in the five content areas.   Please notice the exceptional growth in the ratings.

In addition, The Education Consumers Foundation rates Tennessee schools according to effectiveness in raising individual student achievement.  For 2007, University School was rated the top Middle/K-8 school in this region.  (See the attached chart.)  This is a first for University School and is a direct reflection of the exemplary work Ms. Smith has done in leading the school improvement initiative.

Ms. Smith has dedicated many weekends, late nights, and vacation days over the past four years to help this initiative achieve the positive results listed above.  Please give careful consideration to her work when determining who will receive the Service Award.  She is very deserving of this honor.

Sincerely,

Patricia Jungkeit
