JUNIOR BUC NEWS
For
January 2010
FROM THE DIRECTOR….
Hello Buccaneers,
The second
semester is underway after a few winter blasts and things
have settled in very nicely at University School. We look
forward to a successful third quarter where we hope to
challenge the students with meaningful work and activities.
The big event for this quarter will be the three-week visit
for 14 students from Ecuador who will assimilate as part of
our University School family during the month of February.
They will attend school alongside our students and
participate in many events we have planned for them. Next
fall we will be sending a group of students to spend three
weeks in Guayaquil, Ecuador where they will immerse into the
culture of that school and city. We believe this will be the
beginning of a strong partnership between our two countries
as we expand our commitment to global outreach.
We have a lot
going on at University School so please stay current by
reviewing our website on a regular basis and checking the
school calendar. Just a reminder, we will be making up snow
days on January 23 and March 6 which will be regular school
days from 8-2:30. Please let me know if you have any
questions or if I can be of service to you.
Thanks,
Doyle Brinson, Director
University School

FROM THE ASST. DIRECTOR…
Parent Reminder,
Please be reminded that students need to
be picked up by 2:45 p.m. every day.
It is not acceptable for students to hang out at
school until you are free to come pick them up.
Please make arrangements to have them picked up at
the appropriate time as there is no supervision after 2:45
p.m.
When students have late athletic
practices or games, they cannot simply wait at school
unattended.
Parents are responsible to arrange for appropriate
supervision during those times.
Students attending the after-school
program or after-school help sessions should report to those
rooms immediately at 2:30 p.m. and should be picked up
promptly when the session is over.
Thank you,
Pat Jungkeit, Assistant Director
University School

News
from the Library
As the new semester begins, I just
wanted to remind students and parents about the after school
hours.
The library is open after school,
Monday through Thursday from 2:30-3:30 for homework and
research.
Thanks to everyone who helped with
the Scholastic Book Fair in December.
We were able to purchase over
$800.00 in new books.
For additional online resources, I
encourage students to use the Tennessee Electronic Library.
The Tennessee Electronic Library
(TEL) is a collection of 33 databases that provide access to
over 400,000 magazines, newspapers, essays, podcasts,
videos, e-books, and primary source materials. TEL is
available free of charge to any Tennessee student and is
accessible 24/7 from any computer with access to the
internet. When using the TEL from home, students will
need to use the password:
elvis
Check around the house for
overdue library books – especially with elementary and
middle school students.
We do not charge fines for overdue
books, but we like to keep all the books circulating.
Our guinea pig, Big Red, will turn 6
on January 19.
We will have a library party for her
on that day.

The
University School Foundation recently kicked off the
SchoolMall Program. Information concerning the program
was sent home in December before the break. This
online program helps our school earn cash without having
students selling door-to-door, collecting money or
delivering products. Over 200 merchants have joined together
to offer up to 50% of sales to our school for shopping
through schoolmall.com. To shop, simply go to
www.schoolmall.com. Click
"Select School Now", enter the school's zip code (37614) and
click "Search". Select our school then click
"Continue". You will register by entering your information,
then click "Get Started Now". You are now ready to
place your order with the merchant of your choice.
Also, our school is participating in the SchoolMall Postcard
Campaign January 13-January 22. Postcard booklets were
sent home on January 13. Parents and students are to
complete the postcards with names of friends and family and
return the postcard booklets to the school. Students
returning the completed booklets will be eligible for prizes
and the school will receive $2.25 per 11 mailable postcards.
In addition, the school will receive a $500 Bonus if we
reach our goal of 135 full booklets. Please contact
Nora Lee (483-6348 or
norasnotes814@yahoo.com)
with any questions. Thank you for your support.
