Ms.
Amy Horton,
University
School Middle School Coordinator and
Instructor, who, along with Clemmer
College of Education Professor, Dr.
Martha Collins, recently published
a chapter, "Using
Procedural Texts and Documents to
Develop Functional Literacy in
Students: The Key to Their
Future in a World of Words",
in
the college textbook, “Teaching
New Literacies in Grades K-3
Resources for the 21st
Century Classrooms", edited by
Barbara Moss and Diane Lapp.
Ms. Horton graduated with a Bachelor
of Arts in Education from Tusculum
College in Greeneville, Tennessee
(1998), received her Master of Arts
Degree in Administration from Union
College in Kentucky (2001), and
earned her Education Specialist
Degree in Classroom Leadership from
East Tennessee State University
(2004).
Amy began her
teaching career at Doak School where
she taught eighth grade Language
Arts from 1998- 2001, and then came
to University School in 2001.
In 2005 she earned National Board
Certification for Early Adolescent
Social Studies, and recently
received tenure from East Tennessee
State University as a faculty
member.
Currently, she serves our school as the Middle School
Coordinator, in addition to teaching
8th grade Social Studies, 6th grade
Social Studies and Language Arts.
We are very
proud to have Ms. Horton on our
staff.
Her students report that she
is the “Best Teacher in the World”.
In 2008, Amy
received an award from
News Channel Eleven, TriCities.com,
Tennessee Lottery Educator of the
Week, after being nominated by her students.
