AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ is now available to physicians to recognize "faculty learning" associated with the preparation for, and teaching of, medical students and residents/fellows in LCME/ACGME accredited facilities/programs.

This new category:

  • Recognizes that physician-faculty learning occurs in preparation for or as the result of teaching across the medical education continuum.
  • Demonstrates that this process can be delineated and documented by CME providers to meet the requirements of an AMA PRA formal learning activity.
  • Permits faculty involved in undergraduate and graduate medical education to apply for such credit for "faculty learning".

Activities Allowed: Many activities relate to faculty learning from the teaching role. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing for a student/resident encounter or teaching session
  • Literature searching: updating bibliographies; synthesizing literature
  • Researching case materials related to presentations
  • Case discussion prompting questions and information seeking
  • Researching clinical questions online or in journals and other text sources
  • Reflection on teaching encounters and undertaking improvements; developing learning/teaching plans
  • Developing educational materials related to case or clinical problems

Documentation and Certification Process:

Accredited CME providers may award AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ to physicians learning from, their participation in undergraduate or graduate medical education programs. Physician faculty may be awarded credit based on a 2-to-1 ratio. For example, faculty may be awarded 2 "AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™" for one hour spent "learning from teaching" or 1.5 "AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™" for 45 minutes. "AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™" will only be awarded for teaching that is verified by the Quillen College of Medicine UME or GME office. (Faculty may not receive credit more than once for the same time period, even if the audience involves residents and students from more than one program, being verified by two or more different LCME/ACGME programs.)
