About this Conference: The Medical Society of Virginia Foundation, in partnership with Bon Secours Hampton Road, through a grant from the Physicians Institute for Excellence in Medicine, is pleased to present ER/LA Opioid REMS: Achieving Safe Use While Improving Patient Care. The goal of this activity is to provide education on appropriate prescribing and safe use of extended-release and long-acting (ER/LA) opioid analgesics, as specified in the FDA's Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) in various locations throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. This live conference will offer three hours of continuing education credit.

Overall Conference Objectives:

As a result of attending this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe appropriate patient assessment for treatment with ER/LA opioid analgesics
  • Evaluate risks, potential benefits, and possible misuse of these medications
  • Apply prescribing best practices for ER/LA opioid analgesics, including initiation of therapy, dosing, conversion, and discontinuation
  • Demonstrate accurate knowledge about how to manage ongoing therapy with ER/LA opioid analgesics, including application of evidence-based tools and assessment of adverse effects
  • Employ methods to counsel patients and caregivers about the safe use of ER/LA opioid analgesics, including proper storage and disposal
  • Review general and product-specific drug information concerning ER/LA opioid analgesics, including identification of adverse effects
