Animal Import and Export
Importation of Animals
To purchase animals from an approved vendor, a Laboratory Animal Order form must be submitted to the DLAR office. Please see the ETSU Animal Procurement Policies for further information.
Prior approval must be obtained before animals from a non-approved vendor or academic institution can be imported into ETSU animal housing facilities. To import animals, a Request for Importation of Animals form must be submitted to the office of the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR), Campus PO Box 70418 , a minimum of two weeks in advance of the expected shipment date. Information on the housing and husbandry practices of the source facility must also be provided on the Non-Routine Vendor Questionnaire .
A recent defined health status report for all animals to be shipped to ETSU must be reviewed and approved by the DLAR veterinarian. The health status report for rodents must include comprehensive serological and parasitological testing. The ETSU-DLAR veterinarian reserves the right to refuse import of any animals with a health status that may endanger existing colonies at ETSU.
The shipping of all animals to ETSU must be arranged by the DLAR office to assure that a valid Animal Study Protocol exists, acceptable health status reports were received, necessary funding sources have been established, and necessary housing resources are available.
In most cases, rodents from non-approved sources are housed in quarantine for 6-8 weeks. During this time, the animals will be tested twice for adventitious murine pathogens, including viruses and parasites. The PI will be charged for the health status testing.
Exportation of Animals
Approvals must be obtained before animals can be exported from ETSU to other institutions/ research facilities. To export animals to another research facility, a Request for Exportation of Animals form must be submitted to the office of the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR), Campus PO Box 70418, a minimum of two weeks in advance of the expected ship date.
The receiving institution will likely require several procedural steps, forms and reports similar to the ETSU policies above before approval will be granted by the receiving institution's attending veterinarian. Animals will not be shipped until such approval is granted by the recipient.
The shipping of all animals must be arranged by the DLAR office to assure that a valid Animal Study Protocol exists, approval to ship has been granted by the recipient and an appropriate carrier has been identified. Necessary funding sources must be identified for all expenses incurred to facilitate the export process (health surveillance, shipping cartons, freight charges, etc.)
Note: International shipping and transport of some species (USDA) may require additional procedural steps to be completed. Please plan accordingly.
