Timothy A. Urbin

Assistant Professor and Clinical Psychologist

urbin I was born and raised in Chicago but we have lived in east Tennessee for 15 years, adopting the motto “Chicago by birth, Tennessee by choice!” I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology (1976) at the University of Illinois, an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (1978) from the Community College of the Air Force, a Master’s Degree in Counseling (1980) from the University of Oklahoma, my PhD in Counseling Psychology (1987) from the University of Illinois and finally an MBA (1993) also from the University of Illinois. I am a veteran of both the USAF and the Army National Guard. The last part of my USAF career was as an instructor at the USAF School of Health Care Sciences. I completed my internship at the VA Medical Center in Danville, IL and subsequently held positions as a VA staff psychologist, the Director of Brain Injury Rehabilitation Services at Covenant Medical Center in Urbana, IL, the Clinical Director for Healthsouth Rehabilitation Hospital in Kingsport, and as a neuropsychologist and behavioral medicine specialist for Holston Medical Group.  During my career, I also served as an Adjunct Professor for the University of Illinois and a training consultant for the VA, focused on providing training in neuropsychology, behavioral medicine, and rehabilitation psychology to psychology graduate students and doctoral interns.

My wife Kathy and I met as undergraduates at the University of Illinois and she is an RN working as a clinical research auditor in the pharmaceutical industry. Our two daughters are graduates of ETSU. Our eldest daughter Kristin is a social worker (MSW) at the Mountain Home VA while our younger daughter Laura is a certified radiologic technologist specializing in radiation oncology in Ft. Myers, FL. My research interests include geropsychology, mild cognitive impairment and memory disorders, long term effects of traumatic brain injury and stroke, collaborative medical teams, and treatment adherence.
