Beth Bailey, PhD, Associate Professor and Director of Primary Care Research

Beth Bailey

Dr. Bailey joined the Department of Family Medicine in 2003. She is a native of Michigan, holding an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, and a PhD in Developmental Psychology and Statistics from Wayne State University in Detroit. Dr. Bailey's research interests are broad and include studying the long-term effects of prenatal environments, including exposure to drugs and alcohol, prenatal interventions, domestic violence, child psychopathology, vitamin D and health disparities. Since at ETSU, Dr. Bailey has implemented research funded by the university, the March of Dimes, HRSA, SAMHSA, the state of Tennessee, the Appalachian Regional Commission, the National Institutes of Health, and has been busy managing and assisting with the projects and publishing papers on the findings. She has also been involved in the development of assessment and screening tools to evaluate drug and alcohol use, violence exposure and behavioral outcomes in primary care settings, and in mentoring fellow faculty in research methods, statistics, and grant writing. Dr. Bailey is the director of the TIPS program (Tennessee Intervention for Pregnancy Smokers), which received state funding to address pregnancy smoking and related issues in Northeast Tennessee, and SBIRT-TN for ETSU, a federally funded project to screen and intervene with primary care patients at risk for drug and alcohol use problelms. She currently serves as a member of the March of Dimes Program Services Committee, the State of Tennessee Women's Health Report Card Advisory Board and as chair of ETSU's Primary Care Research Day committee. She is also involved in resident training and graduate medical student education. Dr. Bailey came to ETSU because of the excellent reputation in family medicine and working with underserved populations, and also to reside with her husband whose family has lived in the area for generations. Between them Dr. Bailey and her husband has three children and enjoy spending time together as a family and traveling. Their goal is to eventually visit all of the nearly 400 areas that make up the U.S. National Park System. Dr. Bailey's other interest include politics and hockey (including getting to as many Detroit Red Wings games as possible!). Dr. Bailey can be reached at .
