John P. Franko, M.D. accepted the position of Professor and Chair in the Department of Family Medicine, effective April 1, 2007. Dr. Franko received his Undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Virginia. Following residency training at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, he was in private practice before joining the faculty in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Virginia. From 1999 until this past year he served as Residency Program Director and currently is Vice Chair of the department. He has been an outstanding educator and mentor, has developed a nationally recognized residency program in Family Medicine and has been a remarkably successful recruiter to the Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of Virginia.  He is a recognized authority on the teaching of information mastery and through the assistance of funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and DHHS/HRSA grants has developed innovative ways to use evidence -based medicine and the electronic medical record to improve resident training and clinical care through a focus on information mastery. Dr. Franko is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
