Brief Bio

Jim Kelley, PhD is a tenured professor at East Tennessee State University's Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City. He has served on the faculty of the Department of Internal Medicine since 1996. Dr. Kelley earned his doctorate in Biochemistry from the University of Oklahoma and completed a postdoctoral fellowship as a National Institutes of Health trainee at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundations Lipoprotein Laboratory.

Dr. Kelleys research interests are in heart disease and atherosclerosis, and his areas of expertise include protein chemistry, cellular biology of macrophages, and metabolism of antioxidant vitamins. Dr. Kelley received research funding from the National Institutes of Health for 17 consecutive years, and he continues to collaborate with faculty from Quillen Colleges Department of Surgery on an NIH-funded study, Amelioration of Sepsis by Macrophage Activation. He has supervised four postdoctoral fellows and served as a member of four Masters-level thesis committees.

Author of six book chapters and more than 80 research manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Kelley is currently a member of the American Heart Association Council on Arteriosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology and the International Atherosclerosis Society. He has served as a reviewer for research proposals submitted to NIH, NHLBI and NCCAM and for manuscripts submitted to numerous scientific journals.
