Carl A. Jones Hall, where the Department of Pathology is housed
The Department of Pathology contracts for outpatient surgical specimens which are examined by the residents under the supervision of faculty pathologists at James H. Quillen College of Medicine . While offices, conference rooms, and signout areas are housed in Jones Hall, the department's modern research and diagnostic laboratories are located in an adjacent, connecting building. The research facilities in the department include equipment appropriate for molecular biology work, high performance liquid chromatography, tissue culture, fluorescence and conventional microscopy with digital capture of images, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, electron microscopy, and research histology/immunohistochemistry. The Upper East Tennessee Forensic Center utilizes space adjacent to the department's laboratories, and forensic autopsies from an eight-county area in northeast Tennessee are performed here by pathology department personnel. Residents also rotate through laboratory facilities in other departments, such as a clinical toxicology laboratory in the Department of Pharmacology and a cytogenetics laboratory in the Department of Pediatrics.
