Local Favorites

Johnson City has all the usual chain restaurants and both fast food and casual dining, but if you're interested in local flavor, here are a few favorites listed in no particular order.

Firehouse Restaurant & Catering  (423-929-7377) 627 West Walnut St.
The Firehouse has been a Johnson City favorite for more than 25 years, serving authentic hickory smoked bar-b-que, homemade side items and desserts.  The fact that you are dining in a circa 1930 fire station complete with fire station memorabilia and a restored fire engine in the lobby is just "gravy."

Cafe One 11 (423-283-4633) 111 Broyles Drive
            Neo-Asian, Great sushi

Cranberries (423-282-8765) 600 North State of Franklin Rd.
Fresh homemade deli salads and sandwiches.  I always have trouble deciding between the gigantic Cobb salad and the turkey croissant sandwich, which is made with a zingy cranberry chutney.

Gourmet & Company  (423-929-9007) 214 E. Mountcastle Dr., Suite. J
If we want to impress out-of-town guests, this is where we take them for dinner.

Alta Cucina (423-928-2092) 1200 North Roan St.
All Italian, all homemade seafood, veal, steak, chicken, and pasta with homemade bread and desserts.  I eat here at least once a week.

Poor Richard's Deli (423-926-8611) 825 West Walnut St.
Quintessential college town deli with made to order sandwiches, big screen television, and lots of high-calorie appetizers.  It's all good, but I can't seem to order anything except the Reuben.
